Seen other answer re Rihanna and Mattafix, pon de seems kinda spanish, cant get de pon though. are these phrases related at all.

It's Jamaican slang, pon = Upon
di = the

Upon the river

Pon de river

de Pon and/or Pon De are both FRENCH...
(example: Pon de la "something in French" marche` con le` vu)
