The best thing you can tell them is thank you. Just show your support for them. Let them know what's going on back here in the US. Please don't tell them the negative response by the people though. Tell them to stay safe and to come home to their families and friends. Just let them know you care.
Thanks for what you're doing. It means alot to the military overseas.

be supportive. Some of us dont get mail. about 3/4 of the guys recieve mail the rest just stare at an empty bag after all has been passed out . Not all soldiers have family after they join. So some of us go through deployments with out one piece of mail. To us mail is worth more than gold.

As a veteran, I think it is most important to note, that soldiers, sailors, and airmen want to be acknowledged. They want to know that they are thought of, that they mean something to someone. It's a very hard life to be in uniform, and much more so to be on deployment. Sometimes people forget to say to them that they are grateful for someone taking the oath of the soldier.

Be supportive!! Tell them positive things about yourself if you'd like, and I agree that you need to keep it clean. Some of the troops you'll be writing are married or in relationships.
I've done campaigns like this before, and that just like to hear good news from home. It's good for them to hear that we support them and their sacrifice. You may or may not be able to hear back from them, but don't let that get you down, your message is still important.
If you're sending a package, magazines and snacks are always appreciated.

No, don't tell them your opinion on the war no matter what it is. They are stuck out there and they know it so they don't want to hear about politics. Tell them thank you and that they are brave and you respect them and that we all can't wait to have them back home.

I think the best letter that I received downrange was from a widow from SC. She told me how blessed I was to be doing my job.
