This subject is too complex to address here. Here's a link to a paper written on this subject by my mentor, Dr. Arnold Fruchtenbaum:

Dr. F. presents both sides of the argument and explains why Jesus fulfills the requirements.
I hope this helps. Peace.

Matthew 1 tells the lineage from David to Jesus. True, He was not from the line of Joseph, but the lineage would be traced through the presumed father. Since most of the time, in those days, people were married to distant family members to retain the division of the land of Israel according to the twelve tribes, Mary was probably also descended from the line of David.

Yes. Both Joseph and Mary were descended from David along two separate lines.

Mary was also a decendent of David.
Joseph as Jesus' adopted father could still pass down the birth right to Jesus.
Your's is the same question Jesus asked the Pharisees,

DOH!
You're not supposed to notice that stuff!
And BTW, Whitehorse (below) is an illiterate. Luke 1:26-28 says Joseph was a descendant of David, not Mary. And both gospel geneologies end with Joseph, not Mary, so the claim that one is for Joseph and one for Mary is just an outright lie. Both begin with different sons of David and diverge, indicating that one or both writers simply made up a Davidic line for Jesus like they made up the Bethlehem story.
Yo will note all the braindead faithbots below reciting by rote an explanation of divergent geneologies they clearly have not read since BOTH END WITH JOSEPH.
Matthew 1:16 "And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary."
Luke 3:23: "He was the son (so it was thought) of Joseph the son of Heli"
Each geneology is undenaibly of Joseph, not Mary. yet every Christian, like all those below, and every apologetics website will simply LIE OUTRIGHT about this assuming nobody ever reads the text for themselves.
But in either geneology, since both end with a human father who was not Jesus father, Jesus is not a descendant of David by Joseph, and if Mary is a descendant of David, the Bible is silent on that point and clearly attempts to make him david's decendant through Joseph, which if jesus was descended from David through Mary, there would be no need.
Christians don't read their own "word of God" which makes it even more offensive that they claim we should all live by it.

Mary would have been from the same extended family as Joshph and therefore a decendant of David herself.

Luke shows the trace thru Mary, While Matthew traces thru the Joseph, both coming from King David.... also God's word said that he will come from the seed of the woman.
Gen 3:15
15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
