:) aside from a style of music.

Generally speaking, I consider it a being's non-physical energy that encompasses the totality of thought, emotion, morality, and interconnectedness with others. In other words, I believe all animals have one, I just make no assumptions about the degree to which it is determined by biology/chemistry/etc or whether it is limited to the length of one's physical life.

FYI, a christian just posted a Q implying that atheists either don't believe ppl have souls or don't have one of their own - which got me wondering how ya'll define the concept of soul.

I think in terms of consciousness rather than an entity. I believe there is a cosmic consciousness of which human consciousness is an integral part. I had an NDE where I experienceed an expansion of my consciousness outwith my body and I had a strong sensation of being part of some wider reality that transcended the material world.

This has been on here before.

The soul is a driving force behind actions and can come from any number of places. I think Christians who believe atheists don't think people have souls are incapable of understanding that people can be morally good without religion. I don't kill not because the Bible says not to, but because I don't believe we should kill each other. I do good not for some reward of heaven but because it's the right thing to do.

Some people need to feel like their behavior is monitored and rewarded. I actually take responsibility for my actions, good or bad

The typical definition of a soul is just as supernatural as the definition of God. I don't believe in it any more than I do God. I believe people can experience significant connections to one another and with the universe/nature, but once the life process ends, we resort back to lumps of biochemistry.

I don't believe in souls - it's a religious thing. I don't understand why people just can't accept the fact that we are JUST flesh and bone....

i'm an agnostic pantheist and i don't even try to define "God" or "soul". i consider defining the undefinable to be a gross form of arrogance.
