Because they don't want Christ, they want food.

There is a church in the tenderloin in San Francisco. A Catholic church that has it's doors open for the homeless all the time.

So it does happen. Here and there.

I was moved to tears once at a St. Patrick's day celebration at my church. Our Lady of Mount Carmel. A homeless man showed up at the door to the hall. My brother, who is not a Catholic, rolled his eyes and said "How long will it take before the "good Christians" kick him out.

Both my pastor and assistant pastor (priests) popped up and grabbed the man. Sat him down with them and brought him TWO plates of food. They sat with him and kept him company until he wandered out.

He came to church, as clean as he could get himself, every Sunday after that.

I have been homeless. I will tell you that many homeless feel looked down on by the people at churches. Most of them have drug or alcohol problems, I do, and many have mental health issues. They also have problems meeting basic hygeine issues as well as decent clothing. For these reasons you will not find many homeless in mainstream churches. However they do attend the church services given by charities such as Salvation Army and United Way.

Speaking from years of working in a church, there are a couple of reasons. One is that some communities are just not very nice about opening their doors to the less fortunate. Another is that due to hate crimes, many churches are now staying locked unless in use. Another is that some people are not respectful of what is, to us, a holy space and have ruined the privilage for those who simply want somewhere safe to be warm for a bit.

Your looking in the wrong church! Look in a church that is actually living (spiritually)...they are there.

And if the church is really alive (spiritually), they will not be there at all, but going out to the homeless.

But meeting physical needs of the needy is not the ultimate goal...it's meeting the spiritual needs. And only Christ can do that.

If there church is like mine we have a dress code and homeless chic is not appreciated.

I don't think the homless are welcome in church on Sunday's they are only cared for during the Christams Season so that people can make others think they compassionate

Depends on what sort of church you go to. I've seen them worshipping hand-in-hand with church members.

I've also seen homeless folks wander in to church adn be escorted out.

The generous spirited, giving charitable Christians throw them out on their homeless butts.

The church doors are always open. They can come in if they please to. You don't see them in there because it is their choice. Also, don't most shelters have some kind of ministry?
