Snapping a rubberband is far less injurious than cutting. My sister is a cutter and it's devastating to see how she has sliced and scarred her body since her teen years.
Cutters DO understand, it is really a compulsion and despite treatment and drug therapy, most cutters never stop. You can refuse to leave them alone but you're only going to make yourself despised by them.
Be glad you don't have the compulsion to cut and keep an eye out for truly suicidal behavior. Cutters don't necessarily want to kill themselves - the cutting is a way to release the pain and anger and hurt in their lives.

What does cutting lead to? Scars for one thing. Blood poisoning if they aren't sterilizing whatever they cut with. If they get carried away they could cut too deep and die. Cutting is a symptom of a greater problem, and if cutting stops bringing them the rush it once did, they may start seeking other outlets (like drugs & alcohol) or they may attempt suicide. Snapping a rubber band is NOT just as bad as cutting yourself, so you may want to suggest that to your friends. It can't kill you, doesn't leave scars, and is not as dangerous. Cutting has recently become a more popular release of tension/anger/fear/frustration (or whatever is going on in these girls lives). It has become more socially acceptable for whatever reason among young people. Let them know there are better outlets and more constructive things they can do. Like snapping a rubber band for one, but also something athletic... kickboxing works for some people... or just remove themselves from the situation when they feel like cutting, if they can; just get out and do something else. Or listen to loud music, or play music... Let them know there are better options. Good luck.

It can lead to death aka suicide. Cutting is know as self mutilation.
I had a friend who was a cutter and she wound up cutting to deep and sliced her wrist and that was the end.
Cutting is usually a sign of high emotional stress. If you see this you should be reporting it right away. You can call a guideance counsler and or the police, because they are doing harm to themselves.
They do need help. They might hate you for it, but when all is said and done they will thank you for saving there lives when they realize what they are doing.
here is an article from webmd.com. on cutting and everything you need to know.

as a cutter for a long time I can tell you it's not a high they are after it's a release, it's a cry for help. The only thing it leads to is one day they will cut and get no release no relief from the pain, it just won't be there. These people who cut need help to learn why they do what they do, they need help to stop themselves. I don't know if you can do anything for them but to tell a counselor so they can get the help they are crying out for.

Cutting leads to more cutting which leads to more cutting. It's sometimes hard to quit cutting when deep emotional pain is being experienced.
Recommend that they try to get into therapy. Look at your local community mental health centers........ Find a "Dialectial Behavioral Therapy" (DBT) therapist or someone who runs a group. DBT is the program by Marsha Linehan. (great program for cutters)
otherwise use:
rubber band
hold ice on the wrist as long as you can
draw red pen marks
distract attention

Just try to be there for them and let them know they are not alone. I'm a self-injure for over 10 yrs now and its something the person has to help themselves along with (sometimes) therapy. Or DBT is a good way to go if that helps any. Just hang in there and don't judge them.

After time they will start to looking for ways to get a better high from the pain, which in the long run they can end up committing suicide. Also with all the cutting they do they can end up with something like gang green and then they will end up losing their body parts to the infection.

if the cutter isnt careful they make a mistake they cant fix. let alone when they r over their "cutting phase" they have a whole bunch of scars. i went thru that. i wish i never did now. i have horrible scars that dont fade much and they get darker when i lay out in the sun... new skin tans faster and easier. they wont listen to u. they have to learn on their own. i learned from a scarey situation when my bf was pushing me over the edge b/c he was drunk and other drugs involved. well i was drugged up and had way to much energy and felt really hurt and took a blade to my arm. i probably should of had stitches but i just kept cleaning it, and bandaging it up till it healed. they will learn the hard way or grow out of it. all u can do is try to listen to them, support them... the right way, dont support their cutting. but the more u try to get them to stop, the more they will defy and alienate u. if they cut themselves, dont draw too much attention to it unless its really bad. after u made ur point, dont draw it out and dont get excited over it. usually cutting is for attention. if they see no attention happening when they do it, they may stop.
