What exactly can you USE the miles for? Can you use them towards another flight. Let's say I have 5000 miles, just throwing out a number, & I want to fly from California to Texas could I use those miles and get a cheaper flight? Or how does that work?

I'm pretty sure that you can use them to purchase upgrades or to get free flights. But I don't think that it is possible to use them to get discounts. Go to aa.com and check out the info there; that would be your best bet.

5000 miles ain't much (but I realize you just threw a number out there). For most people, miles are just icing on the cake... fly once a while, rack up the miles, don't think about it, and *poof* free ticket (US/Canada tickets cost 25K miles).

For others who are true FF, the miles are also just icing. The true value in miles is elite status and the benefits of said status (sorry, but e.g., if you and I stand-by, I get the one seat available). The miles earned for redemption are a nice extra.

The following is a list of what *I* use miles for, in order of favorite:

--International First-class tickets on a partner airline.
--Other free flights.
--Upgrades.

You can also donate them, buy an Admirals Club membership, exchange them for hotel stays, buy magazine subscriptions, etc.

5000 really isn't enough to do anything with.

It requires about 25000 to get a free flight, more for outside the continental USA. Upgrading to first class starts at 5000, but will more likely cost you over 10000.

If you are close to having enough miles you can buy more miles. However, this usually isn't worth it.
