Since most of the days of the week and the months of the year are named after various Germanic and Roman Gods, why did the Christians and Jews adopt the calendar and essentially bless it when Pope Gregory XIII decreed its use?

According to the the 10 commandments int he Old Testament, Christians and Jews are not supposed to worship or recognize the existence of any other God, but the One true God. By naming days and months after other Gods, is this not a form of idol worship by granting these Gods positions of honor in our society?

Can anyone offer a rational explanation for why religious leaders do not seem to hold themselves accountable to the same laws they impose on others?

Do you think of the moon on Monday and the sun on Sunday? Neither do I and neither did people in the 1500s.

The Julian Calendar had been used since 46 BCE. The Gregorian Calendar was adopted in 1582 CE.

Pope Gregory did not name the months or the days of the week. He only let the names that had been used by the world for 1,600 years stay the same.

It would have been a virtually impossible to rename the 12 months after the 12 apostles (or whatever) and the 7 days after the 7 holy virtues.

And most important, no one would really want to change (the US still has not even changed to the metric system).

With love in Christ.

The Pope will bless anything and anyone to get a name for himself. Only God can Bless.
