Because its been messy ive put her in kids underwear with a hole cut for her tail to poke through (only when were inside). Its containing the mess (she goes all over the house- bedrooms etc) but i'm worried it may be bad for her, does she need to be able to clean herself constantly , could i cause any problems by doing this? Thanks

since she is only 6 months old, this is her first cycle. It is normal for the first and sometimes the second cycle to be very messy. This usually goes away after the 2nd one though. The underware things is a pretty good idea. As mentioned above, just remember to take it off before you go outside. The heavy bleeding usually stops within 4-6 days. She may continue to bleed some for the rest of the cycle but not as much as the first couple days of her first cycle. She won't mind if you clean up for her back there "as opposed to down there" and she will still be comfortable. Make sure to keep males away from her from now until about 3 weeks from now... maybe 4 to be safe. The 9th-14th day are the days were she can be mounted so be extra vigilant these days.

When I had a terrior she went into season a couple times before I had her fixed. Using underwear or a diaper is a good idea and just take it off when she goes outside for a potty break.
You need to put her in the bath tub and clean the blood off every day... It's a lot easier just to have her fixed so you won't have to deal with her bleeding around the house. You constantly have to make sure she's not making a mess. Some vets will fix her while she's in season and some won't. You can call Vet's offices and they will tell you whether or not they can perform the procedure. Or else you will have to wait until she's not in season anymore.

Personally I have never had any luck with the store bought pad.
My dogs would simply chew them off.
It is normal she will want to clean herself constantly.
Unless you spay her you will have this problem ever 5 to 8 months.
Her heat will last for about 21 days (fortunately she will not bleed the entire time) Usually they bleed for about 9 to 13 days.
You will have to watch her constantly for the entire 21 days, she will be willing to breed a good portion of the 21 days. You will also have to watch for other male dogs.
You will be amazed at how far away a male can smell a female in heat!!!
It will only take a second, and she will be bred.

The only solution I can think of would be to either bath her backend on several occasions and don't cover her up unless you're cleaning the area youself when taking off the underware.Diapers are available for such through any pet suppliers. You may check out http://www.revivalanimal.com this is a good site.Don't breed a pet this young,as it would probably be useless in the first place,as she is still a pup herself and wouldn't understand how to take care of the pups.Would also suggest placeing her within an area of you home where she could,'t roam all over the house.

Hi well yes this can get messy & I don't know if they still make them but you could at one time buy pet sanatary pants with pads...I made my females own from the same design & have used them on my females for many years...This stops the mess & at the same time having males,it stops them getting to the females if they happen to sneak past & get int here the female in season is..all it takes is the blink of an eye lol..The products name was Petnix if I rightly remember...Try a pet product site & email them to ask about canine sanatary products...Regards

In cases like this you can buy special diapers for non-spayed female dogs so they won't spray blood all over the house. If you use them, you need to clean the dog yourself at least once a day. Speak to your vet.
If you don't want your dog to become pregnant, keep her under constant supervision when she's in heat. Or get her spayed.

You could confine her to a room where cleaning up will be easier - like a kitchen or laundry room. You can get doggie panties, you know. You can get little pads that go in them. After she is not in season, why don't you spay her so you won't have to deal with it again.
