It is a total drain on a family's and community's resources, by someone who will never, ever contribute anything at all to that family or community.

Forget dementia. Alcoholism itself is a terrible burden on the local, state and federal levels. Alcoholics get to the point where they are no longer productive members of society, in and out of jails and institutions, medical centers (where nurses and doctors who could be helping others have to detox alcoholics over and over again) loss of work hours, loss of jobs over and over.....families have to pick up the slack...that makes other family members stressed and sick.....I could go on and on.....
