Parallel play is NOT playing with others....it is playing side by side but no interaction between children, which is normal to about age 3.
After age 3, social groups will form, promoting learning from peers. Teachers are there to foster children's learning by making sure appropriate toys are available...as children learn by DOING. Rigorous, formal education is not needed until public school. Having a variety of hands-on activities will stimulate their thinking and provide a concrete reference for learning.

It's very important. There are many kinds of play and each helps to develope the physical, cognitive and socio-emotional skills in a different way. Kids learn to jump, hop etc. - they learn to use their imaginations - they learn how to adhere to rules - their dexterity improves, they learn how to get along with others. There's too many benefits to list all the ways in which play is important.
And just for the record... I believe play is important for adults too!!!
