Recently in British Columbia Canada, a woman gave birth to conjoined twins. Many people were condemning her for not terminating the pregnancy. This includes many Christians. The reason: Because it would create an enormous draw on the health care system. I applaud her for giving these 2 kids a chance, but why would an otherwise Pro-Life group of people promote an abortion for these babies. It seems like a double standard. On a related note, Pat Robertson was all for abortions as the solution to the population problem in China. Does this make any sense coming from pro-life Christians? Note, I am a male......and I don't believe I have a say in what a woman does with her body. It is up to her. Thanks.

Well, there are 2 ways to answer this question.. one from my own personal standpoint and the other from a medical standpoint. Since both involve me in the question, I think I need to answer from both viewpoints.

First my own personal standpoint, which is this: Abortion is murder to me. There is only a few circumstances where I would even say that abortion is right. In this instance, it is a personal choice due to the strain and problems that can occur with a conjoined multiple birth and pregnancy. But I feel that a baby (or babies in this case) have a right to life. Just because something goes wrong during development, doesn't mean that the babies are any less human, or any less deserving of life. Yes, it will be expensive to care for and provide medical attention for these kids, but it is for every kid born, so that argument isn't good enough for me.

Then there is a medical standpoint. Most people don't know this, but by the fourth week of pregnancy, there is a heartbeat, there is brain develpment, there are nerves being formed. A zygot at this stage does feel pain. Most times, a woman doesn't even know she is pregnant until after this point in pregnancy, so abortion is killing a living, multiplying, somewhat thinking being. I have had to perform abortions during medical school and residency and I vowed to never do it in my practice. I haven't and woman have to go elsewhere to have it done. That may seem bad of me to do, but it is my own personal beliefs that get in the way of me being able to perform this procedure.

I do believe that a woman has the right to decide what happens to her body, and if it is her choice, she should be able to end a pregnancy if she feels she must. I am also Christian, so my beliefs get in the way of me understanding how you could want to end a life and not give this life a chance, even if adoption is the only answer for you.

In the case of these twins, the mother did what she thought she should do. We as mothers know ourselves and have to make decisions from the very beginning of pregnancy. Some may not be easy, and some are no-brainers. To this woman, this choice was probably a no-brainer. She knew that this children would be special and would bring something to their lives. It didn't matter to her that her kids were sent to her conjoined. Yes, they will have problems in life, and yes it will be difficult for them all, but there are ways to deal with it both medically and emotionally. Who knows, maybe she had prayed and hoped for a baby and these two sweet children were her answer.

As far as the population in China thing: Pat Robertson is an idiot and a hypocrite. How can someone who is pro-life say that this is the answer to any problem?? Stupid people with stupid ideas always seem to take the forefront don't they?

I do not think that they should have been aborted. God created these twins for purpose. I find it hard to believe that Christians think they should have been aborted, But just because your a Christian....that doesn't mean that you lose your opinions.
I am a Christian and can tell you that there are "Religious fanatics" such as Pat Robertson that have lost the meaning of being a Christian. They tend to give other Christians a bad wrap.

God is pro-Life - since He created it - people who believe and do differently are NOT Christians.

Only God can choose who lives and dies.
