You should first work on your fluency before learning slang. One must know and be comfortable with the basics before advancing on to more difficult levels.

I have a very good Japanese friend who's so fluent in English that when I first met her (in Japan), I thought she was Japanese-American. Her challenge these days is learning slang, and she does so by having many English speaking friends, reading in English, watching movies in English, and listening to English songs. She knows a lot of slang and bad words but still has a long way to go.

I think that slang, colloquisms, figures of speech, etc are the hardest to learn in any language since they're culturally based, rather than grammatically based.

you have been given some good answers, however i would point out to you that it is the content of what you read that is inportant, my best advice would be to start off with a classic by Dickens,or Poe, They may use language that you would summize to be dated however there are no better classical Authors that can construct a sentence, the visual imagery that they can convey in a few short simple sentences are the heart of their work, the second read i would ask to try would be a newspaper, not any paper but the Times. they use the correct phraseology instead of newspeak.
watch classical drama adaptations on dvd rather than tv you can go over again words or phrases that are difficult for you to put into context, if possible listen to the Queen of England in her christmas addressess, you will go a long way to find a person who has a pronunciation of the English language that is correct in its intonation. good luck, LF

Read lots, watch movies and television and pick up words that you don't know. Watch DVDs with English Subtitles, even if they are in English, so you can read as you go along. It's a great way to pick up new words.

Also, try to converse with people in English, ask lots of interesting questions here and try visiting chat rooms and posting boards, it's a great way to meet people as well as practising your skills and you can talk about stuff that you are interested in.

Good Luck, English is a tough Language but well worth the effort as it is one of the best languages in the world with the most words.

The same way English natives do it: by reading books and watching television. Reading will give your writing form and pattern and watching television will shape the way you speak.

Read! Read constantly, read everything you can get your hands on. The best way to learn to write well is to read well-written work frequently. Good luck!

I don't think you should care about the style...the most important thing is to try to speak it properly so that others can understand you.
