My experience in studying and poking fun at religions for decades has been that Catholics tend to have the best sense of humor. They seem to know things are strange in that religion and accept it.

However I tend to get blank stares from a number of other religious people. I think they are not quite sure if they are going to be smote if they laugh or not.

Catholics seem not to worry about it much since they can always run into the forgiveness booth.

I get jokes from www.beliefnet.com every day - and I can't tell which religion has the highest percentage of jokes. I suspect it is Jewish because the website seems to be aimed at publishing articles written by all kinds of Jewish people. I think there is a definite scarcity of Muslim jokes, and perhaps with good reason. That is an interesting point you made at the end - so perhaps if you believe in the concept of forgiveness why would you not have a lighter heart and a more developed sense of humor. Life is absurd, after all.

Methodists can be pretty light-hearted too.

I think a lot of Jews are more able to laugh about themselves. Mostly, they can just fall back on the history of being an abused people. When you have that much bad stuff happening to you, you have no choice but to laugh.

Of course, this is restricting my selection to mainstream religions. If you go outside of that box, then I would easily point to Discordians, Subgenii, and Pastafarians.

I think Jewish people. They went through a lot, yet managed to solidify a stereotype of "funnyness", like Jerry Sinfeld. Cathlotics, in my experience, are some of the most terrifying people around. But mainly because they usually have religious symbols on them...crosses, statues of sints and whatnot. I burn when anything holy touches my skin, hence the fear.

People with no religion have the best sense of humor. They can laugh about things from all religions.

Yeah, I admire catholics for that too, but I have to go with Jews. They've laughed at themselves for centuries. And their relationship with god is almost antagonistic (see Fiddler on the Roof and lots of Rabbincal writings).

Plus, so many Jewish comedians, most of whom do a schtick on their beliefs.

I don't know, but if you were listening to my radio station this morning, the morning DJs were hilarious. They always seem to pick a topic that can make me laugh on the way into work, and I still chuckle throughout the day over something I remember them saying. =) (It is a Christian radio station)
