As a free person in a free country... one has the right to succeed just as one has the right to fail... it is not, nor should it be, that the government is responsible to get someone out of poverty.... the only one responsible for you as an individual is you.....

Fight poverty by making more jobs readily available here in America. Give the Big business a huge tax break if they have at least 95 percent of there labor here at home. But they must not only give the people a job, but also decent Health benefits and pay raises that coincide with the growing cost of living. I know everybody is probably tired of Big business getting tax cuts, but if it would work to keep jobs here in America, I am on board. Oh this would also stop people from abusing the welfare system, because they wouldn't be able to say they can't find a job. think of all the money we would save.

We can fight poverty by educating children in poverty families to become self sufficient when they grow up so that the cycle doesn't continue. There needs to be role models in terms of adopting families and making sure that there needs are met. For example, the upper-middle class could spend more time with less fortunate kids and parents and expose them to opportunities (leisure, education, arts, etc.). Therefore, if families helped other families, we would not need to increase the federal budget. The existing federal funding could go for more complex issues such as health and housing.

Short answer, education.
Long answer, there will always be poverty. There is a limited amount of money and resources in the world. As long as there are people who have more than average, there will be people with less. It's one of the downsides of capitalism.
The only alternative is the entire world being under one communist government, and that is never going to happen, and never should happen.

Want evidence of a quality of a nation's character? Look at how it treats it's weakest citizens.
Not to say that people in poverty are weak, they only lack financial and knowledge resources. Look at what the Grameen Bank has done, simply by providing microloans to help people start their own small businesses! Look at what the International Association for Human Values and Art of Living Foundation has done, developing schools for rural children in India, who wouldn't otherwise be educated; or teaching women how to develop their own small businesses so that they can escape abusive situations!
The solution needn't always be government-oriented, however the government is the civic leadership of our nation -- not private industry. When we have a government leadership that truly cares about helping people then that leadership uses it's powerbase to influence all facets of society to lend a hand, then we can uplift all of society. John F. Kennedy instructed us to ask what we can do for our country, he didn't ask us what we wanted the government to do for us.
Change begins with people, not necessarily with government (although government has a role). Also, change is enhanced and supported when the nation's leadership leads and encourages the citizenry to follow through on it's "better angels".

We spend too much on the poverty, or alleged poverty, of illegal immigrants ... who were never invited to come here, and have no rights under law, and too little on our own citizens ...
This country needs to do considerably more for its elderly, the vets, education, housing and healthcare ... for its own citizens!!
Angela R ... even if all the 12 million were on assistance it wouldn't make a big difference? Well let me tell you, it would make 12 million needy Americans happy to get what is THEIRS, rather than see it given to those who are not entitled to it? Geez ....

Well, we can start by spending less on defense! We spend MORE than half of our budget on the war machine, and where has it gotten us? The most richest in our society, consist of less than .05%.....They affect policy and pay for elections, do you think they care for the poor? Some do and help, but most don't....
Sashie, lets see, the US population consists of 239.9 million whites, 44.2 million hispanics (illegals included), 38.3 million blacks and the rest are two or more races, 4.7 million.....Out of the 44 million hispanics, 12 million are illegals....Even if every single one was on public assistance, it wouldn't make a big difference! Of course, NOT all, if not most illegals are NOT on welfare....Stop perpetuating the myth that illegals are sucking up the system, because they are not! LOOK at the numbers, they speak for themselves....So how do you figure?

the first thing i would do is stop all federal and state and local funding to illegal aliens and then deport them.
Then redirect that money, about $80 Billion Dollars to the poor and homeless people of America.
America has elderly without proper medication and treatment, poor children and homeless vets and if there's any left over i would donate it to the humane society!

We spend to spend more money.
It's up to the poor to get organized like the minorities did in the 1960s. That's the only way you get congress to do anything. Congressmen meed to feel the heat come election time.
