The effort to attain the Nirvana. And non-violence are important ingredient for peaceful and harmonious community life.

This culture had prevented us from agressive competition and development of science and technology - as in the west.

It is important that the human race develop technologies to make the environment more pleasant and friendly, provide nutrition, shelter, communication, medicine, and for that we must thank the west for the development of the sciences.

At the same time, we have to learn to live peace and harmony and this is what the eastern philosophies have to offer.

Eastern philosophy covers a really broad range of ideas. From Buddhist, Shinto, Doaism, Toaism, Confusious, Islamic philosophy, Hinduism, etc... I confess I don't know a lot about many of these philosophies. I did want to say that what I have learned and read about Buddhism through the writings of Thich Nhat Hanh and Dali Lama have enriched my life. I am agnostic but I consider myself spiritual and my brother teases me for meditating and burning incense. I plan to learn more since what I have learned so far is very fascinating and I think can be useful to a persons personal growth even if they aren't in that religion or culture.

My view of eastern philosophies is that they are very practical, based on wisdom and observation. Their stories are not so much focused on historical 'fact' or 'belief' than they are on principals and observations. Therefore, they tend not to be so dogmatic about history and drawing 'dos' and don'ts like laws in a community. They are more interested in observing patterns in creation around them. So instead of developing 'rules' for one's life, they guide their students to a life of balance and wisdom.

I am glad for eastern philosophies. Many believe that Jesus must have taking a trip eastward for part of his life to have been exposed to more eastern-like ideas he taught. It's all entirely possible. There are, infact, a good 18 years of his life we know nothing about.

Eastern philosophies are for thinkers, western religion is about faith. I like a blend of the two and don't find them hard to reconcile.

Darshan or Philosophy has more light than the sun. If you will start reading it, you will start understanding yourself. Then instead of going to the temple to offer prayer to God, you will understand that God is within us and not outside in the temple or Mosque or Church, that God is not different but One, that He is an Ocean and we are drops.
