Here's why it means the Holy Spirit.
Looking again at John 14:16, we see the word "another." In the Greek, there are several words which can be translated into the English word "another." Two of them are the most common. Allos and heteros. Allos (Strong's Reference #243) can mean "else" (or "different" in many applications).
In the King James Version, it is often translated as "more," "one another," "some other," or "otherwise." Used in John 14:16, allos means "another of the same kind."
The other Greek word heteros, (Strong's Reference #2087) can mean "other" or "different." In the King James Version, it is translated as "altered," "else," "next," or "strange." Heteros then, is "another of a different kind."
When Jesus spoke of "another Helper," He used the Greek word allos, meaning that He would send another Who was just like Him! With this in mind, we understand that the Holy Spirit has the same attributes as the Father and the Son.

Jesus became the comforter of people who He got here across yet He became to leave quickly and had to guarantee them that there could be yet another one that could take His place using fact the comforter of the persons who believed on Him. Being in actual form, He ought to no longer be everywhere at as quickly as using fact the Holy Spirit can so the Holy Spirit took over the interest.

Notice he didn't say..."and I will pray the Father, and he shall give you a leader who will first kill you some of you then convert. He will then write a bunch of letters and they will be considered holier than even the words I teach. Every one will obey him. Believe his written words even if the Comforter tells you differently"
People forget that Jesus gave us the gift of Spirit. From then on, his Spirit would find place in the heart of common people, rather than just divine beings.
Jesus was a comforter, as fortold in scripture. In fact he was called The Comforter. The Holy Spirit would be another Comforter who could abide forever because Jesus was somewhat limited at the time with his flesh and the mortality issue it presents.

Basically what Jesus was saying that He was going away but that He was sending another One just like Himself who is the Comforter, aka the Holy Spirit.

Jesus was their comforter while on earth. When He left the earth, He sent ANOTHER COMFORTER who was the HOLY SPIRIT. Since they are 3 in One, there is a separation as well as a oneness. Jesus called it another because it was another part of Him.
The Trinity can be a tough one to wrap your head around - great question!

Jesus Himself was a comforter to them. He was going to send them another one: the Holy Spirit.

The NIV reads:
15 "If you love me, you will obey what I command.
16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever-
17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.
The KJV reads:
15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.
16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
The NASB reads:
15 "If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.
16 "I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever;
17 that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.
It keeps referring to "spirit of truth", even though it differs in wording with counselor, comforter, and helper. Even though it says "another helper", based on these following verses, I think that Jesus was simply speaking of the Holy Spirit.
John 7:39
By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.
John 14:26
But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
John 15:26
"When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me.
John 16:7
But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.
Romans 8:26
In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.

Mohammad was not born to a virgin, and he certainly does not give Christians any of Jesus's followers any comfort. In fact, he tries to draw people away from Jesus and replace his teachings with the Koran. We know how desperate you are to say that the Bible mentions Mohammad, but the simple truth is that it does not, unless you consider the verse about many false prophets coming in Jesus's name, who appear peaceful on the outside but inside they are violent and dishonest.

He (pbuh) is referring to the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)
It cannot be the 'holy spirit' because Jesus says the Comforter will only come when he has gone, however the 'holy spirit' was there at the same time of Jesus when he was being baptized by John
