I live in Northern Ontario. I recently travelled to Michigan and continued to receive calls on my cellphone. How does the signal find my cellphone? I know that cell towers transmit the signals, but does that mean when I call someone on their cell phone that the signal is broadcast on all towers until it "finds" the right phone?

No, your cellphone is in constant communication with the cell towers that it can receive and communicate with. This tells the cell company's computers where you are, so that when a call comes in, it goes to the tower nearest your current location.

Get a Verizon based preapid provider or a Tracfone/Net10. Verizon has its prepaid branch yet they could be high priced. they have Verizon prepaid resellers that are greater fee-effective like Mingo on the spot, H20 Cdma, Air Voice show, fortunate/Myway on the spot, Blackdog on the spot , internet site Plus and others. maximum of them can use Verizon telephones (that are actually not prepaid). they have the ideal insurance of any prepaid community. a number of those plans are paygo, others have month-to-month plans. If insurance is a popular element, fortunate, Blackdog and Mingo's MingoPlus (no longer Mingo Flex) plans have the ideal average insurance. they do no longer cost for roaming. Tracfone/Net10 (aside from Net10 limitless) makes use of airtime they lease from over thirty distinctive networks. they have the ideal average insurance of any "community" interior the U. S.. If insurance is a large situation, you've gotten him attempt one among those 2. Tracfone has greater fee-effective telephones, pricier minutes. Net10 is easy. 10 cents a minute, each and all the time. Texts are constantly a nickel and 3 cents on the qwerty telephones. Tmobile is stable in distinctive factors yet Verizon/Tracfone/Net10 is stable in plenty greater.

Here is a guess:

When your cellphone operates (ie, is switched on) it sends information to the nearest towers to identify itself to the network, sort of like an ip adress. I think the identifier is the NAM code.
