Most of the time an itchy skin rash is an allergic reaction, which is what your doctor is obviously thinking. What does the rash look like? Is is present at all times or does it come and go?
One of the itchiest rashes you can get is hives (urticaria). One of the distinguishing characteristics of hives is that they change - appear and disappear only to reappear in new locations. They change size, shape, and sometimes meld into each other. Hives lasting less than 6 weeks are considered acute, and are usually due to allergy. Try keeping a detailed diary for a week or so. Note everything you come into contact with, everything you eat, and any symptoms you have along with their severity, size, location, etc. Also note times of exposures and times of changes in symptoms. You may also want to pay attention to see if the rash is related to any physical stimuli such as exercise, heat, cold, and stress. A pattern may appear and clue you in to what is causing it.
The most common culprits for skin allergic reactions are foods, medication, and bacterial or viral infections. The trick to getting rid of the rash is to find the underlying culprit causing them.
Have you recently had a cold, flu, strep throat, sinusitis or other infection? If so, the virus or bacteria causing the infection may still be lingering. Do you take OTC or prescription medication on a regular basis, including things like aspirin? Or take supplements or herbals? These are often culprits.
If the rash is due to allergies, then you will need allergy testing to determine the cause. Most likely it will be to something you come into contact with a lot. The majority of people believe that an allergy is caused by something new, but that is rarely the case. You have to have at least one previous exposure to something before you can have an allergic reaction to it. Most allergies are due to things you've been exposed to a lot.
For temporary relief, some of the best antihistamine for hives are (US brand names): Zyrtec, Atarax, Benadryl. if you are outside the US, a drug called Ketotifen is also very good, but it's not available in the States.
Sometimes adding Zantac, Pepcid or Tagamet is helpful - people think of these as being ulcer or heartburn meds, but they are actually another type of antihistamine. Most of the drugs sold as "antihistamines" block only one type of histamine, called H1. Zantac and the other two block a different type, called H2. Skin contains receptors for both types, so for hives and itchy rashes it often makes a big difference if you block both at once.
Cortisol creams can help a little, but use them VERY sparingly. They can thin the skin if overused. Other topicals which work quite well are Sarna lotion, cromolyn lotion (there's a recipe to make it at the chronichives website), Benadryl lotion, Aveeno oatmeal bath (use in tepid water, hot water makes the itching worse), and any lotion which contains menthol.
And finally, I should mention a warning about symptoms getting worse. If you start to experience other systemic symptoms, including difficulty breathing or speaking, sore throat and difficulty swallowing, swollen lips and/or tongue, intestinal cramping with or without nausea, vomiting, and/or diarrhea, get to the emergency room pronto! These are symptoms of life-threatening anaphylaxis and you will need a shot of epinephrine to stop it.

Do you have an accompanying fever? If so, check with your doctor about scarlet fever. If not, more than likely it's something you've come into contact with. Have you begun using a new detergent? My husband is allergic to Tide detergent (not the liquid, only the powdered form) Go figure! Any irritation to your body will bleed if aggravated. My mosquito bites bleed if I scratch too long. Also check the fruits you've been eating. I really believe the more things are being done to crops are causing major side effects. I'm an island girl and have eaten bananas all my life. I just recently discovered that I now have a banana allergy. Because I ingested it, I had trouble breathing and an intense itching spread all over my body. I scratched so much the welts on my body started to connected into big lashes and bleed.

I would religously put lotion on my skin, and take anti-itch/anti-rash/allergy medication. Also, listen to your doctor, he's a specialist. Try to even go to a dermatologist if possible....I'm sure the dermatologist would help a ton!

If you eat when you’re pressured, try munching on pumpkin or maybe sunflower seeds. You’ll need to be able to chew more, which will dissipate most of that energy, but without adding calories.
