it all depends on if the baby is ready or not and if you think you are in labor go to the hospital

I've had 5 kids. I've experienced Braxton Hicks contractions with each pregnancy, earlier and earlier each time. They are definitely a prelude to, but are not an indicator of impending labor. Think of them as helping you to progress toward being ready for labor. The best advice I can give you is this: assume that your baby won't be born until a week after your due date. You'll be terribly disappointed if you wait on pins and needles and don't get your baby early, but thrilled and surprised if you expect a late delivery and end up going early or on time!

My sister had braxton hicks and kept going to the hospital and being sent home. It went on for weeks! Don't let the hospital personnel discourage you from coming in and coming in over and over again. You are the customer and this is YOUR baby. You are close and I have not heard of one baby yet who read the books about the # of weeks to wait to be born! The baby will come when the baby is good and ready. Always err on the side of caution with your little one. Expect her anytime. And...if your water should break, get to the ER immediately. Best wishes and God Bless both of you!

There is no way to tell you when you will go into active labor.
Some women get Braxton Hicks from conception.

EDITED TO ADD:
38 weeks is NOT overdue! Pregnancy is 40 weeks!
Anywhere from 38 to 42 weeks is considered normal.

@ 38 weeks, they might not be Braxton Hicks, but the real thing. After 36 weeks, you are considered full term. Good luck!

I had Braxton-Hicks contractions from about the eighth week of pregnancy, sometimes so strong I had to stop and lean against a wall or sit down 'til it passed. It's not a good indication of when you will have your baby.

You're 38 weeks? Wouldn't that make you overdue? See if your doctor will induce you. Time to get that thing out!

True indicators of labor are of course your water breaking, but contractions and losing your mucous plug. You will know it, it looks different.....
