Children first and foremost should be taught right from wrong. If they do not yet know this then allowing them to lie sets a bad example. Being a child is a truly carefree and magical time. Long ago people started telling stores to children and these have continued. The stores were about christmas, tooth fairy etc. It is a tradition. But if you think of it as lying then absolutely you can tell your children the truth about what is really happening. It will make things less magical and force them to be an adult much sooner in life.

It could be a good way to 'keep tabs' on your kid. Isn't it better you know what's going on with him or her, even if you don't like what you hear, rather than have them lie to you?

If he or she was being bullied, for example, you would want to know. When you ask "Is everything alright at school?" it wouldn't be good if your child were to put on a brave face and say "It's fine."

Teach your child to tell the truth, so that you may help and guide them through the troublesome times. As adults we don't so often need guidence, so we don't have to tell the truth quite as much!

Thats harmless lying, it's all about keeping childhood magic!
I think what is bad, is when a parent lies about something to say another adult when the child knows they are lying! For example when i was about 13 my mum bought me a fake diamond and saphire ring for xmas for about 35 pounds, she told me if our neighbours asked what i had for xmas she was going to tell them it was real diamond and saphire and it was about 150 pounds and i was to go along with it! now that is appalling!
can i just add, this has reminded me of a very religious lady i knew who always told her son the truth (when he was 9) he was told that my cousin had cancer and none of the other kids in the area had been told, however this women refused to lie to her child, and he promptly went up to my cousins chilld and told him that his mum had cancer! (sadly she did die) and all this made her last months on earth even more traumatic!

lying about father christmas etc. are not seen as actual lies because they make people feel good.Telling porkies about breaking the dvd or putting the cat in the tumble dryer on hot however, are seen as bad lies because they are covering up a wilful deceit.

The key is to teach them the difference between a lie with good intentions and a negative one.

Giving a child a childhood of love and wonderful surprises is great, it is better to teach a child from right and wrong from the start,

Go wash out your mouth with soap! May a goblin make net curtains out of my wings if I am not a real fairy and I for one personally know Santa. Shame on you.
