It's hard to tell from just one picture as everyone has a lucky fluke... but it's a good picture though, more art photography than portraiture or documentary photography.

You would probably have to study either photography or visual art, but the main thing you need is passion and reputation. Most start with it as a hobby and then decide to take it up professionally.

If you can get some experience with a small magazine it would do you good :-)

If you could do you think that pros would be going out and spending thousands on their cameras. It doesn't matter if they put an 8MP sensor in the phone, it is still going through that little plastic lens and there is very little control on what the camera does. Phone cameras are probably some of the worst quality cameras ever built, and I could do a better job with my 40 year old Instamatic. It is common for someone to say a good photographer can take great photos with any camera, but that is not really true. Of course it is also not true that it is the camera that makes great pictures. In reality it takes both, a good camera and a good photographer. Also the measure of a good camera is not in the number of megapixals, it is in the lens and the control. The sensor has some effect also, but people are being sold camera on the basis of sensor resolution now without considering that those cameras do not have a lens of sufficient resolution to take advantage of the new sensors. I have many cameras of different types and my phone camera is my least favorite. I have never gotten a single image out of it that was worth anything more than documentation photos. It is a convenience item only, not a quality camera.

It is difficult to tell because you have only shown one image. I have studied many forms of photography and have experimented using different types of cameras. Your shot may be a fluke or it may not be, please do not take my comments as negative criticism as I am only giving my opinion. I do not think anyone has the right to say whether you should give up because if it is what you are passionate about then you should follow your dreams.

You do not strike me as being serious because you have written about whether we think you should forget the idea. If you were truely serious and passionate, you would not take much notice of what people say. The only time you should take heed is when they are suggesting ways to improve your ways and methods not to slander. You should do it because YOU want to and you want it so badly that you would spend every waking moment taking photographs. Everyone has their own unique styles and it is very difficult to replicate and therefore everyone should be encouraged.

Being a professional photographer is a form of slave labour due to the amount of canvassing involved to get your name out into the world. Either you want it badly or your not to bothered about it.

Have a look on Flickr.com , I have many images on there that I have taken and other photographers have posted their images there.

I actually prefer the photograph of Roger - but that's just my own personal taste. If you are interested in technical ability, then yes go and do a course, but if not then just enjoy yourself, and try things out. It looks like you have used a long exposure to achieve the result, perhaps continue to practice with this technique if you are happy with it. You may also like to try experimenting with long exposures and torches to pick out an area within the frame, also try using a tripod with long exposures - that way your subject could be in focus. I like Roger, it reminds me of something Martin Parr might do.

It's not a particularly good shot...but never give up on photography! There is always room for improvement for even the most seasoned photographer.

I think that is one of the worst designed websites I have ever seen, but I do like your image a lot! I do similar photography, except that my subject matters are still
http://raimes.com/gallery.htm
I haven't studied photography, but have studied art and have never felt the need to do a photography course. So you will need to decide what it is you want to do with your photography - is it to be a career or is it to be art?
The image of Roger really lets you down - that is bad, bad, bad!
Good luck.

No.

The photo does not appear to have a distinct subject and did not convey any emotion to me. An effective photo needs to focus on a subject and present the subject's emotional state.
