Gray's Papaya on 72nd and Broadway or West 4th and 6th. You can get 2 hotdogs with the works and a medium sized drink for 2.75 (I think they're best with just mustard though). Street vendors charge over a dollar for just one hotdog...it's been so long since I decided to take my life into my hands by eating one of those hotdogs that I don't know what the actual current priving is.
Street vendors' carts are kept in insect infested storehouses every day and the hotdogs often sit in water all day and lose flavour and are like mush when you bite into them.
Gray's has their own secret recipe for their hotdogs and they grill them and serve them and they snap when you bite them. They're a bit spicier than street dogs
Also noteworthy are Katz' delicatessen's hotdogs on 2nd Avenue in the Village.

Although the vendors have really good hot dogs anywhere you find them in NYC the very best hot dogs may be obtained at NATHANS hot dog stand at coney island. Enjoy the best tasting dogs with a great view of the beach and dont forget the onions. Enjoy!!! I do every time I visit. Hope this helps.

Go to a Nathan's, not a vendor on the street. Street vendors often violate health codes.

i don't eat hot dogs myself but i hear gray's papaya's is the absolute best. i've been in there with friends and the line is always out the door which is a good sign. don't worry about the line either because the service is amazingly fast. have some lemonade for me if you go!!! great stuff...happy eating!!
