That seems to be the standard number, at least in the movies. I have seen trials with as few as 9 jurors and as many as 16.

The old standard of 12 is a Biblical, Old Testament, sort of thing. Back in the day (like 3000 years ago), when there was a dispute or a crime to be decided upon, it was brought before the king. He had 12 advisors - one from each of the the 12 tribes of Israel. And so it goes.....
