I know unless you are raised a Christian that particular comment can be confusing. Jesus replied, "I assure you, unless you are born again, you can never see the Kingdom of God." "What do you mean?", exclaimed Nicodemus. "How can an old man go back into his mother's womb and be born again?" Jesus replied, "The truth is, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit. Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives new life from heaven. So don't be surprised at my statement that you must be born again." From the book of John 3, versus 3 - 7. I hope this gives you some understanding on this particular statement.

You mom being alive or dead does not have to do with your being born again. Being born again does not mean that you have to enter into your mom's tummy so that she can give birth to you again. It simply means accepting the fact that you are a sinner and that you can not save yourself (Ps:51:5), confess your sin to God and be ready to forsake it. Lastly accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. For more explanation, read John3:1-36

The BEST answer to this is the one jesus gave to this very same question:
John 3:2-7
There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:
The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.
Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?
Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.

That should handle the question VERY well indeed.. Jim

We are born again through baptism. The Christian Church for 2,000 years has taken the words of Jesus "you must be born of WATER and the SPIRIT", as a clear reference to the waters of baptism and the spiritual grace which is poured out upon us through this holy sacrament. Unfortunately, many latter day manmade churches have reduced this divine fountain of grace to a mere symbolic gesture, concentrating on the fact that Christ said we must be born of the spirit, while ignoring the fact that He also said we must be born of water.

Being 'born again' means spiritually. that means that you have to be born of the spirit. read John 3:1-21 (note: the numbers spread out in the passages are the verse numbers)

1 Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish ruling council. 2 He came to Jesus at night and said, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him."
3 Jesus replied, "Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born again. [a]"

4 "How can anyone be born when they are old?" Nicodemus asked. "Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother's womb to be born!"

5 Jesus answered, "Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit. 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit [b] gives birth to spirit. 7 You should not be surprised at my saying, 'You [c] must be born again.' 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit." [d]

9 "How can this be?" Nicodemus asked.

10 "You are Israel's teacher," said Jesus, "and do you not understand these things? 11 Very truly I tell you, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. 12 I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? 13 No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the Son of Man. [e] 14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, [f] 15 that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him." [g]

16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God's one and only Son. 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 All those who do evil hate the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. 21 But those who live by the truth come into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.

5. There is no other way into heaven; not by good works, not by going to church every Sunday, not by following every letter of the law. The only way is through acceptance in/of Jesus Christ
John 14:6 Jesus said to him, I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life; no one comes to the Father but by Me.

Matt 10:32,33
32 Then everyone who shall confess Me before men, I will confess him before My Father who is in Heaven.
33 But whoever shall deny Me before men, I will also deny him before My Father in Heaven.
