I think you should go to any school for 11- to 18-year-olds - you would be APPALLED.
I occasionally work at one and have to help 14-year=olds with their questions by reading them out because they are almost totally illiterate.
Their numeracy skills are similarly dismal. Someone wrote on here something along the lines that spelling is not important.
By that argument, all great literature is not important, it is OK to say "Could of" instead of "Could have", and "innit" will soon be heard in the House of Commons.
Of course spelling is important, and never before have we had such simple tools available to ensure that we don't make mistakes.
The answer is, I am afraid, laziness. However, those who are too lazy to use spell checks will find that their opportunities for lucrative employment are woefully in short supply - the sort of educational standards and work ethics that they display will leave them at the bottom of the pile, way down below our better-educated European partners from Poland and, soon, Romania and Albania.

Yes, I am also annoyed by monolinguals. It's also annoying how you can hide all questions that aren't American, but can't hide the American ones.
Also, trolls annoy me. And the low quality of the answers. And questions that aren't questions but just a promotion of their own political view or the bashing of the opposite view.
