Well, I'm a teacher and I will tell you why they are doing it. Maybe then you will better understand and it will help you and your mom when talking to the principal. Kids nowadays don't know how to play....just play together. When they go outside they don't know how to interact or think of creative games to play. Many children don't know how to have fun and interact in positive non threatening ways. Directed play is teaching them how to play together, think of games to play instead of fighting and bullying each other, etc. Why not tell the principal that the idea of directed play is good for awhile. Once the children have learned how to interact in positive ways..............a few months or just one recess a day then have the other one be free choice recess.
Teachers can still have directed activities for those who want it while others can go and have free time.

Directed play should only be for Gym Class. 7-8 hours of school?? My kids are in school for a little over 6 hours and when they do get recess, it's half an hour. Does your little brother have recess everyday? If so, he's lucky. Mine only gets it 2 times a week.

We have the same problem in my sons school. I think that it is one of the dumbest things schools do. They stop the children from using their own imagination to create games. They are also starting this healthy snack thing which drive my wife and I crazy. I had to go to the school and basically yell that my son has the right to eat what he wants and what we want him to eat. As far as the directed play you need to talk to the PTA and principle regarding this matter but dont be upset if nothing happens. You as a parent are allowed to remove your child from school during lunch and you can let them have their own recess. I advise planning this a couple of days a week along with other parents so your child is not alone. School is very stressing for children and by them making them play games that they might not want to play may be illegal cause even as a child they have rights.

What are our schools coming to? We have the same thing going on at our schools, too. I remember playing on the playground 3 times a day and taking naps in kindergarten. No naps now, and no 3 times a day either....only once or twice. And our elementary school (which consists of 3rd, 4th and 5th graders) is having school dances!! Now, what kids aged 9 to 11 will want to dance together? To me this is an act of making the kids grow up faster. And people wonder what's wrong with kids these days.

She should try and get the support of the teachers, chances are they do not like this either- having to come up with games and organize. They should be watching the kids at recess but leaving them to make their own recreational choices without their teachers dictating. This 'directed play' sounds like more work for everyone.

Check out this link.
Earlier this year our school won some money from participating in the Cartoon Network campaign to save recess.

that is so sweet and thoughtful of you.

Simple fact. Kids need free time to develop social skills and build friendships that are very important to development.

It is good because you can take a break and play as much as you like?

just tell your mom to tell the principal to give them freedom for whatever activaty they chose to play on their time...the teacher gets most of the day with them so she can tell them what to do on her time!!!!!

this is my feeling. and i am a parent. i think directed play is good. it makes the kids all play together instead of .one child being left outthey need free play but directed play helps with socialization. kids can be very cruel and not include certian kids directed play eliminates this.
