At that age, they love things that do stuff but they also love..well, boxes. Check at WalMart...they have these cool wooden boxes in the toy section. Target has them too. They have little doors all over the box, one opens with a hook and eye closure, one has a slide bolt, you get the idea. Add in a few puzzles and he's not only having fun but learning.

If you have oodles of money and good insurance, get a ride on toy like the jeeps they have, about 100 bucks and the rechargable battery. My kids had one and they LOVED LOVED it. If you don't have that much money or time or yard, kids love plastic cars they can sit in and make go on their own. My son got one a few Christmas' ago and he loved it so much he opened all the rest of his gifts while sitting in the car!

All kids are different. My son's favorites at three were Thomas the Tank Engine and My First Leap Pad. He and most of the other 3-year-old boys I've known like anything with wheels.

A sturdy musical instrument.
I'm betting your son already has a lot of toys. Mine, I can't think of anything to get him he hasn't got already.
So move on to something more challenging. Get him a little wooden guitar - a proper child-sized one, not a toy one - and get him to make noises on it and yell songs.
Or a recorder, or an electric piano keyboard. All of these are pretty inexpensive and will teach your boy all about the joys of making music and are also good for developing motor skills.

What is he interested in? My son likes Thomas the Train. He is also a big fan of Little Tykes Dump trucks and backhoes. He likes cars, puppies and kitties, Spongebob, Elmo, and his trike. Just look closely at the things he plays with and go from there. You could also just take him to the store and let him pick things out. Buy one of the things now as a treat and save the other ideas for later.

I got my son a big dinosaur for xmas, the brand is Fisher Price and it's a t-rex. They call it Imaginex. It's 4years and older, maybe you won't mind that. Anyway, I got it at Target for $24.95 and it had xtra toys in the box! Check it out! They have smaller ones from the same brand less expensive too.

A toy that can be manipulated with his hands to foster fine motor skills would be great. An easel (like Fischer-Price) would be great for a developing artist! Some toddler easels have a chalkboard on one side and hold paper on the other. There is also a tray for crayons, markers, or chalk. That is my vote!

toys, toys, and more toys. you didn't mention what your son likes, but you can never go wrong with toys... or maybe take him to a baseball game, something that would really be exciting for a 3 year old!
