It depends on whether this is a infant baptism (where you might know the parents) or the baptism of a teen or adult (where you might know them). Since the point of baptism is a welcome into the community of faith and being claimed by the church, a gift typically might fit into part of the faith journey.

For an infant, typical gifts might include cross ornaments for the room, or cross jewelry, or a child's bible. For an adult, cross ornaments or jewelry are typical, but also books on faith, lives of saints or holy people, examinations of that church's theology, or other spiritual or religious works are good gifts. For a female, modest jewelry like a thin gold necklace could also work.
Depending on how close you are to the baptized and how many people are invited, don't feel the need to get an elaborate gift - most likely they will end up with too many crosses and rosaries, and little angels or saints and such.

for an infant baptism where i want to bring a gift, i try to go to a catholic or christian book store and find a kid's book that has a good message. my favorite was one that had a squeaky lamb inlaid into the thick cardboard pages.

Infant baptism?

Religious articles like cross (to put on the wall), statues, nightlights.

Clothing is o.k., too.

I bought my nieces and nephews music boxes (small for their dressers).

Money is o.k., too. (for the college fund, no doubt!)

A Bible or Prayer book, with all the relations and visitors signing it.
Boxed and to be kept for later on in life.

A cross for the wall, angel, or a rosary both should be blessed by a priest.
