If not then what is?? I mean, I don't want tohave to go around reading the back of dog bags tofind out what's in it. Like maybe Beneful? I'm not too sure what the best brandwould be. If you have any ideas and possibly some info to back it up that would be great..

Ha, yes, I did know that part about how to change it. I had to go through that with my puppy.
I've also heard that "Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul" is good for them as well as "Wysong" and "Eagle Pack"??

I read the first long comment and you're right. I should ask my vet an dI plan to. I also realize I didn't give you enoughinfo on my own dog to better help withthis question.
I havetwo dogs. One is an 11 year old female Chi with allergies and a heart problem. She's also a tad overweight so we're trying to get that fixed. She's on threedifferent meds right now: fish oils, Thyrosyn and enalapril maleate. She is quite lazy and picky to what she eats.
The other is a 5 month old Chi who has recently gone under to get fixed and almost didnt make it out. Her heart stopped as they gave her the anethesia and then again after they got her back. She was blind deaf and dumb for about a day and a half. But she made an amazing recovery. Currently we have found out that she has a liver problem, which is why she was unable to break down the anesthesia. (it was something they could not have forseen.) She is very active but is also picky to what she eats.

The long and short of this is that there is no real best brand of dog food. It's all a measure of pros and cons.
What are the features that make a dog food "good"? It needs to be:
a complete nutritional complement for the age, breed and lifestyle of your dog.
palatable (nutrition is useless if your dog wont eat it!)
affordable
No dog food is best at all of these. A lot of dog foods that you buy at Wal-Mart may be palatable and affordable, but are the nutritional equivalent of living off Cheetoes. Likewise, veterinarian approved pet foods like Hills and Royal Canin are much better at providing the full nutritional value but tend to be expensive and your dog may or may not like them, especially if he is used to eating Cheetoes! (Imagine having to switch to green string beans!)
I may be pushing the veterinary bill here, but the person best suited to help you pick out a dog food for your pet is your veterinarian. Your veterinarian will know how your dogs age, breed and lifestyle will change what he needs from his diet and help you make the best choice. Most often, the food a veterinarian recommends will be pricey, but don't fall into the trap of believing ththat this is money-grab on the veterinarians part. You only get what you pay for (probably why a box of Kraft Dinner is 50 cents and chicken breast meat goes for $10 a kilo - Hi I'm Canadian".
I hope that somewhat answers your question

you can ask someone in a pet store. There is really no need to buy the "best" brand of dog food, as most dogs eat things unknown and have no problems. But even though you said you dont want to, you should look at the back of food bags, just to see what the 1st few ingredients are. You want real meat to be #1. Im pretty sure Eukanuba is in the top contenders for quality though. Make sure when changing your dogs food that you do it gradually with a little of the new in with a lot of the old, then half and half, then more new than old, then all new. But I bet you already knew that. Good luck

Beneful is even worse than Eukanuba.
Canidae and Innova are the 2 brands most recommended to me by responsible dog owners.
There is a brand at walmart called natural life at walmart I may try out that seems pretty good.
If that doesn't work well, I will try a brand called Blue Buffalo that you can get at petsmart.
When you switch your dogs food, do it gradually over a period of 2 weeks to avoid stomach problems.

We haven't had any problems with Natures Recipe Venison and Rice which we add a bit of fish oil to (made for human, screened for mercury fish oil caps) and we give them some human foods from time to time, like unseasoned and de-boned chicken. When you change a food, make sure you do it gradually and you can also give your dog about a half cup canned pureed pumpkin. It helps their digestion and is great for when a dog has diarrhea/upset stomach caused by something a dog might have gotten into that didn't agree with them, or when changing foods. Though change should still be gradual. The Venison (or rabbit or duck formulations) are atypical protein sources that often work better for a dog with sensitive stomach and allergies. Homemade food can be great. If you'll notice, all commercially made dog foods add vitamins because the process they use to make food that can last a few years on a shelf, often removes a lot of what they need. When the major food recalls affecting many brands of food occurred some years ago, our dogs were on a home cooked diet and they thrived on that. We made homemade dog biscuits and their food consisted of fresh meats, usually chicken but sometimes a bit of lean beef or turkey- about 50 percent of the meal, and white rice or sweet potato- 30 percent and 20 percent veggie- like green beans or carrot or other dog friendly veggie. The also had some added fish oil caps (about half a human amount, human grade fish oil caps and they weigh over 50 lbs each) and occasionally we'd stir in some cottage cheese or low fat yogurt. We'd top off the food with some egg shells which we ground in a coffee grinder. This was tedious, but when it was found that content such as rice protein concentrates, glutens from wheat or corn were sources of problem, we went back to Nature's Recipe as it was not recalled during that time and cooking for three sizable dogs was tedious as well as having limited freezer space which would have allowed us to make bulk portions, had we had more room for our food too! Though Nature's Recipe does have some drawbacks as with any commercially prepared food, it does not contain artificial dyes, corn or wheat products and was not recalled during all those major recalls that affected so many brands of food, over 100, that were using some of the same contaminated product.NR did have recalls somewhere in the mid nineties when I believe there was a product that got contaminated and they quit putting that product in food which spared it from being recalled when the major recall issue occurred that affected over 100 brands of dog and cat food.

I used to feed my dog Eukanuba and it caused him to vomit bile every morning. But he is a very sensitive dog, most dogs do fine on it. There are a lot of worse foods out there than Eukanuba. I feed my dog California Natural now, and no more morning sickness. It's relatively expensive however.

I have used Wysong and Eagle Pack. Both are exceptionally good food for dogs. Some of the top agility dogs eat these brands. They use a higher quality product than most dog foods found at your national chain pet stores. You can find them at some co-ops and natural food stores as well as online.

Where are you from? I order organic food that is amazing. It helps with arthritis, and also for dogs that have hot spots. Their fur is shiny... it is great food. There is no added "stuff". It is called Canusa, and it is from Ontario, but they deliver anywhere for $7. e-mail me if you want the contact info.
