Our conversations with God, are always up to us to listen and hear and speak. God speaks , yet in many different languages. Everyone and everything, has the Light within, of God. Without that glow, there would be no motion. It is the spark, that gets a person to walk, or eat, or talk or see.
That spark is a Feeling, wether happy, sad, angry, glad.
Yet it is our spark, that was apart of God, and still is a part of God.
God is like a Light bulb, and we are the light that it sends forth. We are always connected to it, and it to us, and through it everyone else as well.
So we are speaking with God, when we talk with a Friend. Or petting a cat, or smelling a flower, or sitting quietly and asking questions, and allowing any answer to return even if its silence.
God is Always talking to us, but its up to us to listen or not.

I believe God hears me, but not I do not "hear" his answers. It is too easy to confuse my own thoughts with what I imagine God would be saying and that would not be good.

Yes, it's just different than how we perceive human conversation. More emotions, less words.
