yes, it usually is a hairball. Be careful w/ kittens though; they like to eat anything and everything. It's kinda sad to watch, but there's really not much you can do but let them cough it up. You may want to try sticking a paper towel underneath them when they do it to save your carpet. They have treats that help per vent hairballs. Also, brushing them regularly should help.

Some cats shed a lot, some shed very little. And depending on the weather, it may depend on how much they shed. Some of my cats will occasionally cough up a hairball, and others have never done so. My youngest kitten is a semi-long hair, but doesn't seem to shed much. Often, cats can process the fur they swallow through their system. One thing to consider is getting a hairball medicine (flavored greases) and seeing is she likes it. If so, it will be wonderful and put you at ease. Another thing is to get your kitten used to a brush, although at a young age it is a toy, but it will get her used to being brushed. It is a wonderful way to bond with her.

Yes, that is probably associated with cough hairballs.
You should get them some fresh grass. I have a pot with some grass seeds planted where my cat goes to eat it everyday. You can also get them hairballs dry food, that help with that. If after you do this they still cough, then is better to take them to the vet.

Get: Hairball remedy.

Where: Walmart, Petco, local vet office

Do not give your pet anything else...butter is not good for them and vasoline may not be safe.

It comes in a tube similar to toothpaste and is flavored so cats like it. It ranges from 4 dollars to 10.

Get laxatone from the pet store and give him a little every day. Also, if you can't find laxatone, give him a tiny bit of butter or margarine.
