There is a way to change your key. There are utilities that will allow this to be done.
Also, you could install a fresh copy of Windows XP on top of what you've already got, and it would not erase your personal files and programs, although it's always risky, and always advised to back up everything before re-installing Windows.

MS bundled WGA (Windows Genuine Advantage) with a fairly recent release. It's basically a pircay check.
They are running a program, apparently, whereby you can buy a license for the media you have for around 60% of the RRP, and you've then got a legit copy of XP. I'm not sure how you'd go about it, though.
Your other option would be a system restore which, i think, would undo any updates, and then turn automatic updates off. You'll then have to keep your box patched manually, and check you're not installing WGA. It'll most likely be bundled with any new MS software, since everything will require it for Vista, and that's what MS is gearing up for. IE7's got it.
Your last resort, really, would be to reinstall, but you want to back everything up first obviously.

Dont use outlook express man, got the same issue, except
mine was done by a shop which is no longer trading, cost me £280 and got a copy!! just grudge paying out more to fix it,
not to mention the inconvenience, gutted, Microsoft are not
sympathetic to my cause either, the situation just gets worse
as well dude, trying to find out more about new program(vista?)
and hang on for that, seems ridiculous they want so much money
for something which is essentially finished, any suggestions out there?

You could do a system restore back to an earlier date. (perhaps when you did a windows update or install IE7 or Windows Media Player 11). Do the restore when you did either of those things
(Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools> System Restore

No point, because if you download one from a p2p site, there is a chance:
a) of getting a virus with the file
b) Microsoft can now trace illegal copies and can shut down your computer
c) You won't be able to get Windows Updates and your computer will be vulnerable to security attacks.
