Or can someone be bipolar and hardly has any mood swing.

Yes to the first: Bipolar describes cycling between major depression and mania or hypomania. If the depression isn't severe (i.e. to the point of suicidal thoughts) and the highs don't get into full blown mania, then that's cyclothymia. You could also be simply periodically depressed (which is a mood disturbance) without being bipolar.

No to the second one. If you are bipolar, then by definition your mood swings are extreme.

Someone who suffers from bipolar suffers extreme highs and the lowest of lows, and when not medicated properly, there is hardly a mood in between.
So, to answer question one: Clinical depression can cause sufferers to experience mood disturbances, but not to the extreme points of bipolar.
Answer to question 2: Through family members who have suffered from it, I don't think someone can be bipolar without having mood swings.

Yes. Someone can be depressed (mood disorder) and not have Bipolar.

A person without a mental illness can have dramatic mood swings. Its refered to as "normal".

yes there are variations on that theme, bipolar I, II...straight depression is a mood disorder.
