Try hybernating instead of shutting down. Still, Windows has always been a painfully slow operating system to boot. At one time there was this joke.....
"Did you hear that the Federal Government just bought a new computer? It's got 10,000 Pentium Processors. It's so fast that it can boot Windows in under 5 minutes!"
To enable hybernation, go to Control Panel, Appearance and Themes, Display, Screen Saver, Power.
The computer will hybernate according to your settings, and startup much faster. With this though, you don't get a clean system each time, but rather the condition it was in when it hybernated. Still, it's a faster startup.
This also takes some disk space as it loads your RAM onto disk, and restores it when waking up.

if you want it to boot faster... there is no way you can except buy new CD of Windows XP. The reason it boots so slowly is that you updated it so much that now it is slow. If you mean boot slow as in booting to the main screen shen you log in, you can try stoping some programs to run when you log in.. such as Yahoo Instant Messenger, AOL Instant Messenger, ICQ Messenger, or MSN Instant messenger. When those programs having to open them slows down the computer. When i installed them i always uncheck open on log in. HOPE THAT HELP!

> try uninstalling programs that u dont use
> type 'msconfig' in Run dialog box and in the Startup tab uncheck all the programs except antivirus and the programs u use.
> avoid booting with a CD/DVD in the drive.
> install tune up utilities software it can help ur computer to speed up
> the last advice is, the more programs u install, the more it takes time to boot
