im fourteen years old and im afraid of the dark. nothing has happened to be, no one abused me or nothing ever happened in the dark that im blocking. but its not just the dark..whenever i goto the bathroom i pull back the shower curtains because i know no one is their but just for reassurance. if im alone in the dark i turn on a light, or purposly leave the tv on for some source of light. but recently i turned on the light..but the fear didnt go away. i still felt as if something was lurking in the dark corners. my friends say things like im afraid too, but im reeeealllly afraid. but the thing is i wasnt afraid when i was younger, but as i get older, the fear doesnt get better, it gets worser. maybe its the fear of being alone? because i can sleep peacefully if im laying in the bed with someone, like my mom or my sister. i just stopped sleeping with my sister two months ago when she went to college & im having a hard time sleeping alone. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP, IM TOO OLD...I FEEL SO WEIRD

Did you start feeling scared after your sister went away? Doesn't sound like it.I share your fear of the shower curtain and don't even get me started on the basement stairs( mine have open backs) and I'm 40! You might want to try ,as silly as it seems, a night light with the radio on.If the night light idea is a bit corny go get yourself a small lava lamp, that way you can blend it into your room. Bring it up to your mom or your sister. I don't think it is over you feeling alone of being afraid of being alone. That would give you quite a different sensation.

OMG! I have the same problem! I'm 21 though! I am terrified of being by myself, it's not just the dark that I'm scared of, it's when I'm alone anywhere, if there are people with me, in the next room, in the same perimeters, I'm fine. Nothing happened to me when I was little either. I'm sorry to tell you, My fear has been with me my whole life and I dont know how to make it go away, I wish it would! I cannot watch scary movies! I look behind the shower curtain, in closets, jump into the bed so nothing grabs my feet, put the covers up to my neck,I open my eyes about a million times a night before i get to sleep to make sure nothing is there. Now that I'm married, I sleep so much better because my husband is there to keep me safe. When my husband leaves to go to work in the morning, while I'm in the shower, I have to peek out of the curtain to make sure there's nothing outside of it. I hate that I'm that way, I REALLY do! Oh yeah, I slept with my sister until I was 17 years old! Don't feel weird, hopefully age and time will eventually make it go away. I feel ya girl!

I knew someone who was 25 or so who was afraid of the dark. I thought it was kind of funny, and a lot of people are afraid of the dark. It depends where I am living, a few shorts months ago I was living in a basement suite, and I could not sleep with the lights off completely, I had to have the living room lights on which were off my bedroom because I was afraid....it was because i watched a stupid horror movie and mabye because i was pregnant, but now in my new place I prefer all the lights to be off and I feel very safe here. I dont know why.

Do not feel weird. I am 32 years old and I am also afraid of the darkness. You will get used to sleep by yourself. Maybe talking to a Psychiatrist can help you to find out why you are afraid of darkness. Maybe you can try "Bach´s flowers" (sold in nature stores or supermarkets) there is one in particular for fear.
You are not alone

You are not weird... You have the same reactions my little sister has. Look its very simple, you have to think with logic, when you feel fear your inner child is talking, its time you dominate the child. Start thinking as an adult, analyze seriously: It there a good reason to be afraid? is there something that is going to hurt me?
The answer is no. what you are experiencing is normal at ages 10-15. It will pass in time but you can fight the fear with logical and rational thinking.

When I was about 10 I wanted to learn how to do a cartwheel with one arm so badly. My fear was holding me back.... until- I told myself to go for it- I said to myself, " So what?- .... what could happen?.... I'll break my neck- I don't care!" I tried it and it worked the first time!!! Fears will hold you back. You have to overcome this one.
Do the following: sleep in your room and leave the light on outside of your room (I hope it's not too cold where you live). Then gradually lessen the gap between door and door frame- until it's fully closed. I did this with my sister when she was about five and still couldn't sleep in her own room. It worked!
