have you ever seen a site that has a lot of animation? or that takes a while loading but the results are really cool? (video, animation, music, etc.) well that's a flash movie, and they are used to do more complex sites than the ones made on plain HTML, Macromadia Flash MX (the latest version is Flash 8, now bought by Adobe) is the software that allows you to to that, its a pretty cool tool but its not easy to use, if you're planning on learning i would recommend you to get some classes, Good luck!

Macromedia Flash MX is a software package that web developers can use to create "Flash" content for a web page or a web site.
Then, people on the internet can download a free Flash player
from Macromedia (Actually, I think it's owned by Adobe now)
to see the presentation, video, or web content.
It's pretty cool, all the stuff you can do with it, but it is a little expensive and it isn't really easy to learn, especially if youe are just beginnning as a web developer.

It is a program Macromedia makes that allows you to create Flash animations. Adobe now owns the Flash stuff, here's their site with the newest version of Flash Professional (version 8):
