We need help to get it to it's owner. I have the dog's tag and the phone number for the Vet office. They will not give the name of the person that owns it and the number to reach the owner is disconnected when the Vet's office called. Is there a national database to find the owner by the dogs tag number and the Vet's address?

Have you an idea in which town the Vet's office is? If so, call the local newspaper and ask them if they'd put in an ad with the description of the dog and the general location ( town ) of the Vet's office. Also try calling the town's animal shelter and tell them what the problem is. Call the area shelters around where you live and see if they have an old inquiry about the dog...don't give up and good luck...

Ask your local shelter if they have a scanner. The dog may be microchipped and if so the shelter can obtain the necessary information for the owner. Though it may be hard for you to do, it is best to let the shelter handle this sort of situation. They are qualified medically to treat the dog, have professionals who can observe the condition as well as behavior of the dog and the means to contact the owner. IF you feel the dog is better off with you and your family, tell the shelter that you would be willing to care for the dog if the owner is not found.

Regardless of how things end up, know that you are doing the right thing and there are a lot of people out there who are grateful for kind people like yourself.

Try this website: http://dogdetective.com/dog-id-tag-search.cfm

otherwise I would put something in the local paper and also in the paper in VA near where the dog came from, maybe a friend or family member will know something and get in touch with you. When you find the owner you can ask them fro reimbursement for the advertisements.

Try calling The Humane Society of The United States.

Their number may be disconnected, but if you look up the phone number on the net, you might be able to get a name. Data bases are slower at getting corrected. If you can get the name, then look that up in the phone data bases. You might just be able to find the person that way.

The dog may have been microchipped just take it to any vet and they should be able to tell you. The microchip will have the info to contact the owner.
