It's not exactly wrong to call the Almighty by the impersonal "God", just as it's not wrong to call one's offspring "Child". If we want a familiar and close relationship, however, it makes sense to use the personal name of someone we love. The Scriptures encourage us to use God's personal name.

The Hebrew name “Yahweh” (or “Yehowah”) does seem to accurately pronounce the divine name. Just as the Hebrew name “Yeshua” (or “Yehoshua”) is translated into “Jesus” in English, the Hebrew name “Yahweh” is translated into “Jehovah” in English.

The important thing is to use God’s personal name in whatever language you speak, rather than insisting upon the impersonal! The name “Yahweh” is certainly preferable to the non-name “God” or “Lord”, especially if you speak Hebrew. If you speak English, feel free to use the name "Jehovah".

(Psalms 83:18) That people may know that you, whose name is Jehovah, You alone are the Most High over all the earth

(John 17:26) [Jesus said] I have made your name known to them and will make it known, in order that the love with which you loved me may be in them

Hello, Vanessa.
My name is Deborah.
To my parents, I was always "Punkin".
To a few very special people, I am "Mom".
To some other very special people, I am "Nana" or "Grandma".
I also answer to "Deb", "Miss Debbie", or "Ma'am" on some occasions.
I have a friend who has been calling me "Suzy" since the day we met...and I still can't figure out why. Long ago, I gave up trying to correct her, and, with her, I answer to "Suzy"...although I always sigh....
I've also been called "Hun", "Sweetie", "Babe" etc...but we won't go into that...
And then there are those who have called me some other names...I'd rather not discuss those, either....
Point is, if I, a mere human being, can recognize that these people who call me by all these different names are talking to the one and only me, I'm pretty sure our Infinite, All Knowing. All Powerful, Ever present Creator...aka "God"...knows when someone is talking to Him, as well.
You do what makes you comfortable. I'll just call Him "Father". He seems to like that title....

A rose by any other name would smell as sweet. But then, not many people are killing in the name of rose. Do you honestly think an omniscient being, who knows everything anyway, really cares what a bunch of brain-dead earthlings call him? I doubt it. People just need to humanize everything, even the unknown.

Oh expensive - that's a difficult one. merely attempt to pt it in the back of you once you get people who flow offline etc. it ought to be using fact they produce different stuff occurring yet for sure you will consistently get the fickle ones on the cyber web. merely save being friendly and be your self - who's attentive to, you're able to locate that one particular chum ultimately. Why no longer attempt shifting from YA and flow onto a talk board which deals with something you love doing or are very interested in. For me I joined a close-by canines rescue internet site and have been given in contact with that - by that over the final year I certainly have met and made pals with some marvelous people who would be my pals for all times. the fact all of us love canines is what bonds us interior the 1st place and is the consumer-friendly component that keeps us in touch initially till authentic friendship grows. I not at all used to flow out the two yet now i flow a week and help walk the homeless canines plus become in contact in different stuff like fund elevating. provide it a flow - and end being so difficult on your self. Its no longer something you do I guess - it extremely is merely the way of life now, human beings infrequently have lots time unfastened for others. you're saying you do not have lots - have you ever tried looking on your interior sight unfastened-CYCLE ?? there is lots stuff on there merely being given away. you ought to get a super form of stuff to make your flat homely from there. good luck xxxxx

There are many names of God in the Old Testament, depending on how He is describing Himself to the needs of the people He addresses. El-Sahddai, Eloheim, are just two. Jehovah is the revealed name, but it is always contextualized to the people's needs.

Take Jesus for example, in Muslim nations His name is called Issa. Jesus is the Anglicized form of Joshua. The New Testament, written in Koane Greek (a root language of modern English) made it easy to translate as Jesus. The language of Jesus day would have been a form of Hebrew, known as Aramaic. Jesus' name in Aramaic means "Savior."

Robertsons Word Pictures in the New Testament says:
"Jesus is the same as Joshua, a contraction of Jehoshuah (Nu 13:16; 1Ch 7:27), signifying in Hebrew, 'Jehovah is helper,' or 'Help of Jehovah'" (Broadus). So Jesus is the Greek form of Joshua (Heb 4:8). He is another Joshua to lead the true people of God into the Promised Land. The name itself was common enough as Josephus shows. Jehovah is Salvation as seen in Joshua for the Hebrews and in Jesus for all believers. "The meaning of the name, therefore, finds expression in the title Saviour applied to our Lord (Lu 1:47; 2:11; Joh 4:42)" (Vincent). He will save (sôsei) his people from their sins and so be their Saviour (Sôtêr). He will be prophet, priest, and king, but "Saviour" sums it all up in one word. The explanation is carried out in the promise, "for he is the one who (autos) will save (sôsei with a play on the name Jesus) his people from their sins."

I would stick to "God," "Father," "Jesus," and "Holy Spirit" when I pray. In general conversation, I would use God as a general reference to the Deity. "God the Father, "God the Son," "Jesus Christ," and "God the Holy Spirit," or "God the Spirit" if I need to refer to one of the persons of the Trinity in paricular.

Our God, the Alpha and Omega, The Holy Trinity, has not revealed His name in scripture other than "I AM." Any other names for Him, have been given by man. Tradition has it that to know the name of a god is to be able to invoke his power.

It is likely that we are not capable of fully knowing His name, just as we are not capable of fully knowing His nature.

Peace,

MoP

I think it is most important want we mean when we say God. In other words, do we really know God - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit? Or is god to us some "unknown god" like Paul tallked about in Acts? Or is it some false idol we worship instead of God? He wants us to worship Him in Spirit and in truth!

My understanding was that Jehovah means God. It isn't the same as saying "girl" or "hey you", more like saying "your highness" or "Lord". I actually call God "Heavenly Father" when I talk to Him.

Why not call him Yahweh?

You are obviously a Jehovah's witness.

Maybe people started calling him 'God' rather than using his name out of respect.

He didn't restrict us to only certain names!! The thing is, if someone says, 'Hey girl" we'll never know who they're talking to, but if they say "God" we immediately think of the Man above!! Let's just call Him Father!!
