Let's see. You've been on here three or four days and you do not believe we landed on the moon, that Lee Harvey Oswald shot Kennedy, that 9/11 was not a cover-up, and now area 51. When are you going to question John Wilkes Booth, Remember the Maine, Pearl Harbor, OJ Simpson, who shot JR, and Britney getting implants?? Do you believe anything at all?

Area 51 exists (Air Force Flight Test Center, Detachment 3) and you can see the images of it on Google Earth.
Whether or not it's where you have aliens or not, you are forbidden to go there and the government works very hard to keep people out.
The wiki article is quite good on it.

Probably not anything anymore due to all the publicity it's recieved in the last DECADE, but in it's hayday, it was suspected as a possible advanced or alien spacecraft testing facility due to the large number of unidentified flying objects seen there. Shortly after it became public knowledge, the govt. bought even more land surrounding it in an effort to keep people from being within actual visual sight of the facility on the only ridge accessable to civilians overlooking the facility. You can see it now even by typing in AREA 51 on google earth.

NATIONAL SECURITY. ---- Especially during the cold war and the arms race with the Soviet Union, and even today, It is important to always be ahead of the game when it comes to military technology. After World War II, the newly created U.S. Air Force found itself the spearhead of a possible confrontation with the soviet union. The Air force was developing new technology both in aerospace and in nuclear weapons. They needed a Top Secret facility so they could conduct their testing, research, and development without other enemy nations gaining knowledge of the technologies being studied. ---- Secret installations like Area-51 are essential, and vital to the national security of the United Stated.

I've always though it had something to do with UFOs but in later years with the flying ban and security at the highest to get within a mile of it then there does seem to suggest there is something the authorities don't wish the world to know about

Of course there's something to hide there. It's one of the bases at which the US test out new propulsion and aviation equipment. You don't just want Joe Bloggs walking in taking photos and then posting them on his website for good ol' Kim Jong Il to download.
Every country has secretive military installations.
