two years ago we managed to rescue a dog that had been beaten half to death because it had been born with an overbite, within hours of claiming the dog we took it to the vet and were told that the dog woud never be well and the only thing they could do was to put her down. We refused and took the dog with us. We taught her to walk, eat, and to enjoy pats without fear, it was one of the hardest things i've done for a dog. Today she is a mother and a happy dog, but is petrified of other people, and vets have still tod me she isn't getting 'value' from life! i also had another dog diagnosed with diabetes and was promptly told it would be easier to put her down than to give her daily insuin shots...again i took the dog home, and she lived another two years with regular insulin shots three times daily. These have been from different vets throughout Australia, why do vets tell us to do things like that? aren't they supposed to love animals?

I don't think it is a matter of whether or not vets love aminals, but more a matter of how important pets are to their owners.
There are many different types of pet owners ranging from those one that will do anything for their pet (including spending an ungodly amount of money on them) to owners that love their pets but can't afford to take care or a really sick/disabled pet, to the owners that really just want an easy way out.
The way I see it is if your vet said that it would be easier to just put your pet down than take care of it then the vet really is just trying to help out. They know how expensive it can be to take care of a sick pet and know that most people probably cannot afford to. This way they can let the owner not feel like a terrible person buy giving them this way out. Also I think vets know that if an owner really would and could do anything for their pet then the owner would go and get a second opinion or just take care of the dog.
My example is when my first doxie started having back problems. He could barely move and when he did you could just tell that he was in pain. My father took him to a vet in town and that vet told us that there wasn't anything we could do for him and that we should just put him to sleep. My dad then went to another vet for a second opinion and that vet was able to help out dog. He ended up being just fine.

I think a lot of vets become hardened. It's easy to understand with the job they have. Most get into it because they love animals but for any animal lover to have to put one of these amazing creatures to sleep, I think it would be heartbreaking every time. So they end up losing some of themselves. I am always annoyed by the way they act. Vets really piss me off but I try to keep this in mind when I'm dealing with them. I also have been around dogs all my life so have the advantage of knowing a lot before I make any decisions. Thankfully you have made the right decisions so far, just always try to keep the dogs best interest in view. I know it's incredibly hard to have to say good bye but the time comes as you know. It just doesn't need to be brought on any sooner than necessary.

First, BRAVO to you for not giving up on these animals. Too many people consider animals to be "throw-away". Don't want it any more or too much trouble? Either neglect it or send it to the pound.
My vet was wonderful through the 17 years I had my dog. He had a heart murmur from puppyhood and had been abused and had terrible behavioral problems when I got him. But he learned to trust and was a wonderful companion for many years. When the time finally came, "I" made the decision and my vet supported the decision. It was his time and we both knew it.
I've never had a vet try to convince me to give up. I'd suggest a new vet!!!

Yes, I have. I live in America, and the same thing goes on here. My rott was diagnosed with Masticatory Myositis, so I took her to three different vets, and they all said the same thing. We tried drug therapy for about six months, but her symptoms kept getting worse. As it turned out, they were right about her quality of life, etc, and we did have her put to sleep. Very sad after having her for 10 years!

I think for the most part they do love animals. I had a lab that I was told that it was best for her to be put to rest and I listened.. it was one of the hardest things to do but she had cancer and her hips were failing... It was cruel to have her suffer like she was... Unfortunetly animals aren't that well at communicating how much pain they truly are in. I trust my vet and have faith that since he was my dog's vet for almost 10 years that he knew what was best for her.

I had a vet that used to take a look at to push business meals that he bought that I KNOW are dangerous. I did plenty of study while I acquired my puppies to determine the fine factor to feed them. I might always argue with him approximately the elements of those meals (Science Diet, Eukanuba, and so on.) and he claimed they have been larger considering that extra checking out used to be performed on them. I ended up switching vets, and my new vet recommends meals I KNOW are well-- my puppies are presently on Canidae and my vet says its an fine meals.

when i was a young teen my mix breed dog got hit by a car (chasing his girlfriend) the vet said to put him down...i just couldnt he was my dog so i took him home and sat with him all night long...he would put his head on my lap and i knew he was in pain but i made him as comfortable as i could...even his girlfriend who was the neighbors dog came down and sat with us it was like a love story between those two....he survived but he was crippled in the one of his back legs but he lived a few more happy years and died of cancer. He died a few months after my father did and his death allowed me to mourn for both my father and my beloved dog.
