"Guten Morgen!" - used until around 10am
"Guten Tag!" - between 10 am and 5pm
"Guten Abend!" - in the evening after 5pm
However, in informal situations such as between friends, it is often just "Hallo!".

Spelled as "H-a-l-l-o" Pronounced just as it is in English, but stronger emphasis on the 1st syllable. You can refer to this web page for basic translations. Hope this helps.

If he comes from Bavaria, you can say "Servus" to him, I know it sounds strange, it is "slave" in Latin and i do not know why do people in Bavaria and Hungary say Servus as hello, but I guarantee you he would be quite surprised. Unfortunately in the rest of Germany they do not say this word so often.
