Not all girls like cats--that's a stereotype that's been in place because most girls like cats. However, I know of several girls and women who are dog lovers. (My paternal grandmother, for instance.) And I know lots of men who love cats and dislike/hate dogs. (My father, my brother, my maternal grandfather and uncles, for example.)
I think the stereotype comes from the personalities of cats and dogs. Cats are domestic and have more worth in the home, the way women are traditionally supposed to be. They are soft and cuddly, yet aloof and seemingly all-knowing, like women. (My paternal grandfather, who hated cats, said that they were too much like women and that it was disturbing. Ha!) Also like women, they are intutive and moody.
Of course, dogs are the other way around. No need to wonder what a dog is thinking; their thoughts are on their faces. They are more of an asset in outdoor activities (traditionally male); are loyal and steadfast. Hence the stereotype that men like dogs and women like cats. Like all stereotypes, it's not always 100% correct.

I think it is because it is more difficult to develop a relationship with a cat than a dog. Girls like the feeling that you get once you establish that life long relationship.
Historically, guys have prefered the simple obedience of a dog. It is easy to make friends with a dog. But that has greatly changed and there are many guys with cats today.
Cats are much more independent thinkers than dogs and you have to earn their friendship. Once you have it, you and your cat will be inseparable.
I have two cats and would not trade them for the world. My wife fell in love with them and we are all so close that we spend all our time in the house on the same piece of furniture, whether it is the couch or the bed.

I am an animal lover who loves cats , & dogs. I believe the reasons are , 1st of all they are low maintenance , they can be left alone without destroying the house , they are small even though there are many breeds of small dogs, you do not have to clean up after them or take them for walks outside in bad weather , they do not chew your shoes or anything else they may like . So personally as I mentioned there are a few reasons why cats are more prefereable , but really they are just as great as pets as a dog . My cat is loving, smart ,kind , playful , funny , affectionate , healthy, and happy . I love him so much , and I miss him when I am away from him , if I had a dog I would also love him as much . All in all they are both great pets to have and do wonders for a persons mental and physical health . They become members of your family, and if you live alone , they are your family . I highly suggest people who love animals to welcome either or into your life . I t is well worth it .

Girls are just more likely to admit they like cats. I know plenty of single guys that own cats but they say things like "well I found him and I just uh... couldn't let it starve" or "it followed me home" It's been seen in the past as being more masculine for a guy to like dogs rather than cats.

I think its` because they are cute and fluffy. Most of the girls like cats for that, but not ALL the girls like cats. I have two aunts, three cousins, and five friends who dislike cats. Most of them because they are allergic to cats.

Well it is not just women who like cats... but cats are great creatures because they are smart, sassy, independent, and can be really sweet. All cats are individuals and they do have a mind of there own. My cats are playful and are very affectionate.

Thats a good question. I guess a lot of us woman do like them. I love cats! I can only speak for myself. I like cats because of the comfort I get from hearing them purr. I enjoy letting them sit on my lap while I stroke them. It is actually relaxing to me. I also like their independence and the fact that they do not take crap off of anyone. A dog will take abuse and never leave a cat will not. If you mistreat them they are gone! Dogs drool and cats rule!...*grin*...

I think cats are sneaky, moody and only care about what they want. Just my opinion, but I don't think girls necessarily like cats better. With so many small breeds of dogs now, I think girls like them better, small dogs are like small children always wanting to be held and they follow you around, they are much more loving than cats.

A soft creature to cuddle with and most parents steer them towards a cat when they are young.
