...without abandoning religion and nationalism? It seems these are the two facets of culture most likely to trigger a doomsday scenario. Thoughts?

Threats of extermination for the most part always seem for some reason to turn people to religion not abandoning it. Look what the cold war ended up doing.. that is why "under god' is in the pledge of allegiance...

We are not responsible for our race. we are responsible for only ourselves. If we do not worry about nuclear war, or such, and we focus on finding out what is best in life for oneself, then the rest of the world will take care of itself. There is no need for fear, unless one wants to attract that reality to themself. If all stopped fearing and instead focused on there self, then we would have a world where people didn't fear the worst, and therefore didnt expect the worst. and so doing, wouldnt react unneccessarily dramatic.
For example, Korea , created nuclear weapons out of Fear that the usa will threaten them.
And that is because the usa attacked Iraq. Yet why did the usa attack Iraq. Because the USA Feared what weapons they Might have. Instead of Focusing on there own country.

Out of Fear , creates the world of destruction and death.

Yet change the Focus, for focusing on ourself, shows Love to ourself, and so doing, the world loves its self. And out of Love comes forth a world of peace and happiness.

Our Focus determines our reality.

I know that there will be no nuclear war. That Peace talks will solve this war. All armies will retreat back to there Home lands, and this time era will be but a memory, Yet also a lesson , that all war does Not have to end in massive destruction.
In fact it shall set forth a Peace that has not been felt since the world began. And will change the world to a land of Love more then most may yet understand.

Pure economic greed and the desire for leben straum (living room) kicked off WWII, along with nationalism, and resulted in the first use of Atomic bombs.

The problem is not religion or nationalism per se, but an innate inhumanity within humanity. Even you have a tinge of it! Yikes!

Evidently, Higher Intelligences are tesing their weaponry too!
I think there will be some limited nuclear warfare. But Higher
Intelligences will not allow us to completely destroy this world.
The darkening of the sky in prophesy will not be
a Nuclear Winter. It will be due to the worldwide earthquake
prophesied. Isaiah 24, 6th seal in Revelation.
After that, God have mercy on us all!

The human race will survive it.
A castatrophic occurance may or may not happen before the Kingdom of God takes over.
Either way, the true followers of Christ will remain.

Not as we know it. Drastic changes will take place out of necessity. Society will re-form based on the abilities of those who are left.

Read Stephen King's The Stand - they had to do the same thing when a plague killed 90% of the people on earth.

no.

it will take the realization that other religions are also worthy of respect, something that goes against the grain of monotheism.

it will also take placing the human race and the planet above nationaility, something which is happening slowly, but is too easy for nationalists to undermine just now.
