What is gout? has been answered well already. Here the docs recommend no red meat! None at all. No Beer! They also list a whole host of other foods to be avoided, like tomatoes etc. Sufferers who abstain from the forbidden foods suffer far fewer bouts of pain. (fancy meds are either not available or far too expensive here) The diet restrictions DO work, but are not fool proof. Besides a lot of people start to feel ok and then, well, I'll just have ....... and of course they regret that the next day! So talk to your doc about dietary control before you start resorting to over kill with drugs. You may also need drugs, but you should never rely only on these, its not good for you, but fantastic for the drug manufacturers.

They used to call it the rich mans disease because only the rich could afford to eat so much meat and refined white flour bread. They could drink beer and wine all the time, where the poor had to make do with little meat, many veggies, wheat, rye or oat bread, and drank water or milk. You have gout because you eat a poor diet with too much fat and too much salt. You don't drink enough water or liquid to keep the urine from concentrating and the uric acid crystals are now collecting in your joints. You probably are slightly overweight, male, and don't get much exercise. You probably have a sedetary job, and sit much of the time. You are also likely close to middle aged. All of these reasons would explain why you have gout. You do not have to keep it, though. You can change most all of the factors which contribute to the disorder, except your sex and age. That's up to you.

Gout is an accumulation of a uric acid in the body. usually it starts with pain in the joint of the big toe that is not from an injury. to help relive the symptoms go on a low purine diet--your dr should give this to you. you should see your dr to be sure that it is gout and not something else. he will probably do an x ray to be sure it is not an injury and if that is normal a blood test to test the uric acid level in your blood. Just follow the diet and take any meds he gives you and it will go away.

As you probaly already know it is often connected from eating too much rich food. It is the formation of crystals that causes the problem and pain. I 've heard from a friend that had it he found what stopped it for him was to drink more water, give it a shot . Try drinking more than you feel like for a couple of days and see how that goes.

my brother has it and no one else in my family does. He eats fresh cherries whenever possible and takes a cherry supplement. Still has bouts of it and has to get meds from Dr. occasionally.
