I don't know anything about liver disease, so can you guys help me out here?

My friends dog has liver disease, I'm not sure how serious it is, but is sounds like it's pretty bad. Her dog was suppose to go for surgery to help her out, but becayse the liver didn't get better the dog is not going for surgery now. So I was just wondering what will happen to my friends dog? Will she have to be put to sleep because of it or what?

My friends dog is probably between 7 months old and 1 year. My friend got her dog from an alchoholic guy. So my friend thinks that her dog Molly already had a bit of liver disease when she got her.

Thanks!!

Molly(The Dog) is getting some medication to help her out, and once it was better she was suppose to get an operation, but it wasn't getting better so now she is not going for her operation anymore.

Its hard to say what will happen to your friends dog with out a more detailed description. Most likely the out come will not be very good. When an animals liver shuts down there really isn't much that can be done. There is the possibility of removing the dysfunctional part of the liver (surgery) but that does not always cure it by any means. Sadly enough it really does depend on how much money the owner is willing to spend on the animal. I know it is a very hard decision to make but unfortunately it is a reality. Bottom line it sucks. I would guess that there may have been some trauma to the liver or the puppy may have been born with a dysfunctional liver. Either way the outcome will be the same. Please be there for your friend when the time comes and help them make it thru a very hard time... I do not envy either of you...

The liver is one organ that can regenerate, but you haven't said how hold your dog is, nor whether he's having other issues. Our docs will use a food called l/d. It is made by Science Diet and is for liver disease. If your dog truly isn't eating nor drinking, then you could, as last resort, try warming his food, try chicken and rice, try baby food, or anything else he may eat. You could try using broths over the food. Liver disease will cause nausea, so if there is no fix for your dog, then he may very well be in his last days. I would find another vet, take the bloodwork and go for a second opinion. That way, you'll have more than one vet's opinion as to the issue. Ask the vet what the prognosis is, and whether or not there is a treatment. Is your dog on medication for nausea? Did they at least try anything? Our vet wouldn't just tell a client that their dog has a disease without either trying to fix it or telling the client that the prognosis is grave. I would call in the morning for more information, unless you already know and just didn't tell us. Sometimes I have seen these dogs hospitalized, put in IV fluids and IV antibiotics and they can get better. Ask if this is an option for your dog. good luck

This covers all liver disease in dogs.

Unless Molly was a drinker, the alcoholic guy didn't "give" Molly liver disease.

If a dogs liver is like a humans, it can regenerate itself.

we had a springer spaniel that developed liver disease. he did not make it very long. our vet told us that it was the breed. i don't know about your dog but some breeds are prone to it. i wish your friend the best of luck with their pup.

If the liver disease is going untreated, it's not going to get better...
