What you are hearing is your heart beating. When you lay on your right side you a blocking your ear on the right side. So your ear can't hear anything externally seeing that it is blocked by a pillow. So your ear is now able to hear things on the inside. Your carotid artery which is the big artery that supplies your brain with blood lies just beneath your ear. So what you are hearing is your own heart beat via your carotid artery. If you lay on the opposite side your left side you might hear something similiar. On your left side lies your jugular vein. This is the big vein were blood exits your brain going back to the heart. This vein also lies just beneath your ear. So you might hear a similiar thing but perhaps a little bit more faint. I hope this helps. Take care.

If you hear a rushing sound, it's the blood being pumped through your ear. Sometimes you will be able to feel and hear the vibrations of your heart through your matress and pillow if you lay in just the right way.

Otherwise you probably just have the carotid artery in your neck leaning against the pillow as well, and the vibration and sound are tavelling through it.

Maybe your head is congested, I mean your sinuses are congested. But also it could mean that you have water in your left ear, or that you have a middle ear infection in your ear. go to your doctor to have it checked out. The ears, nose and throat are connected you know. And there exist special doctors for that: Ear nose throat Specialist. First go to your normal doctor and if he/she cannot help you, they will probably refer you to the specialist. This is important, because if not resolved, maybe you could lose your hearing in that left ear. Best of luck, mermaid199
