I"m wondering if the cop that wrote me the ticket (speeding) didn't send it in. It was my first ticket EVER, (I am 32 and have been driving since 16), he was very nice. . .I was on a country road, it was sunny. I was doing 19 over the limit. He was so nice. . .he didn't take my licence away, he suggested to use cruise control and not to go 10mph over the limit. I called the county to pay the ticket and they couldn't find it. (I called two weeks after it was written.) She told me to call back in a week or so. I'll call next week, but I'm wondering if he is just not going to 'turn it in'? Like I said, this is my first ticket, I am new to this. THanks!

I am a retired police officer and I will answer the question as it applies to my state of N.J. When a ticket is issued to a violator, the ticket has a number, when the ticket book was issued to the officer all the numbers were recorded by the court. If that ticket is not turned in, at some point it will show up because there is an audit of the ticket books issued. I have forgotten a ticket in my book and six months later I was asked where is the ticket. You better have an answer. You have a copy of the ticket with the court date, so you have no good reason not to find out about it. If you wait to long they will put a warrant out for you arrest and suspend your driver lic.

If you have your copy, I seriously doubt that it was forgotten. Now in some rural areas, the officer may not turn in paperwork but once a month if it's not showing up in the system that might be why.
Things get lost every now and then but theres a pretty tight accounting for traffic tickets these days and if it was lost someone would figure it out sooner or later. Do not forget to comply with the citation even if it is lost they will find it and when they do everything that applies to it from the date of the infraction will apply.
Generally you have three options, go to court, go to traffic school, or pay the fine.
Court is a hit or miss thing, since its your first ticket, the judge might give you a break, withhold adjudication, and not give you points or he might be in a bad mood. The cop might not show up and the case will be dismissed.
School usually ends up costing you more money but you don't get the points.
Paying the ticket results in a fine and points.
If you have the time to go to court, thats probably the best option.

Call the Sheriffs Office if it was a county officer and tell them your story. They can contact the officer and ask him about the ticket. Ticket books are audited and the only way the ticket wouldn't appear on the docket is if the officer voided the ticket. If it is voided he will turn that ticket back to the Sheriffs Office or Police dept and it will be stapled void on the ticket book.

What is the court date on your ticket? Sometimes the information is not in the computer until the week of court. If you have a court date on your ticket then appear in court on that date. If it's not on the docket more than likely the Judge will dismiss the ticket.

You do not need an attorney for this. If you need more help you can email me. I was a District Court Clerk for 9 years. Only been off work a year.

Just keep checking back with the court. In the event they tell you not to worry about it, get it in writing. A lot of things could've happened. The officer may have forgotten, just didn't turn it in, some kind of personal emergency and hasn't been back to work yet, etc. If you are really honest you can show up to the court house with the ticket and they will probably let you just pay it. In any event, make sure you get documentation of the payment.

May he didn't write you a ticket. Maybe he just went through the motions of writing you one. Check with the county officials a couple of more times, and if the results are the same, don't worry about it.

it's never happen to me but i believe it's possible if the officer that wrote the ticket lost it or spilled coffee on it so he didn't turn it in. if they gave you the option to go to court and i fight it, i would. i got a ticket thrown out because the officer didn't show up.

I doubt the officer didn't turn it in. If it was lost anywhere in the shuffle, it was lost at the court house. I would stay on them though and even still show up at the court house on the date on the ticket just in case they find it. Human error runs rampant at our court house I can't imagine it would be any different where you are at.
