With all the immigrants coming in, there is alot of fuss over language. Should they learn english and we learn spanish, together? Or should they just learn english?
I'm learning spanish, myself.

Yeah. I think is a great idea and is really fair. Why the poor immigrants need to learn english. The americans should learn spanish as well. That's a very good deal. Then everyone would have the knowledge of 2 languages!

I think that's really up to the individual. I don't think the immigrants necessarily have an obligation to learn english. English is not our official language, it's simply the most common here. In fact, we do not have an official language. therefore, they have just as much a right to speak spanish as i do to speak english. Personally, i would love to learn spanish b/c i'm fascinated with the culture and i find it to be a fun language.
But, i don't think either group really has any obligation to learn the other's language, it is simply a matter of personal preference.

I think Vanessa u are doing the right thing...it takes more than inmigrant but u might want to travel someday and work abroad and the more u know, the more a company will pay for u. After all, spanish native speakers sums for the second largest language in the world.

when i lived in a city that had a large population of spanish speakers i learned enough to do my job (and they don't teach automotive words in spanish class). i think it is ignorant of people to just think that because they cross the border they should automatically know english. it takes time to learn another language. the thing that upsets me is those who make no attempt to learn english. i am a military wife and we are currently stationed in germany. i am doing my best to learn enough german to get by as well.

it is common courtesy to try to learn the language of the country you are living in. it is nice if they try to speak your language as well, but to expect people to learn many other languages is too much i think. obviously in america spanish would be the second language to learn, but what if you wanted to be a business person- then it would be japanese, so why waste your time on spanish?

english is the most common language, you can go to almost any major city in the world and find a large populous that speaks english.

i think they should try to learn english as they are living in america and that is the official language of america and if americans want to be nice, or do well in their business then they should learn spanish, but the average american i don't think needs to learn it. it's like math, it's nice to have a good grasp of it, but by no means necissary.

I suppose it's going to make it less difficult. And despite the fact that I uncover the languages really specific, local audio system of each inform me they are able to comprehend audio system of the opposite with out translation. So truthfully you would simply use Spanish in Italy, and you would be understood. Still, Italian is a amazing language and I inspire you to take it up while you get a threat.

Definitely they should learn English but we also learn Spanish because it's always nice and beneficial to know extra languages, at least for personal enrichment and culturlan understanding.

I believe we should. My great grandparents came to America from Spain in their teens. My Grandparents and my Parents were not allowed to speak Spanish at school. So now in the third generation of our family, my brothers and I don't know the language. But I am teaching my children I am trying to learn the language that was lost myself :-)

They should learn English. Why should I learn Spanish, this country is a traditionally English-speaking country. I currently speak two other languages (German and Esperanto) and would like to learn Cherokee (I'm part). If I moved to Mexico, I would learn Spanish; I think it is correct for them to learn our language if they wish to come here. I am under no obligation to learn their language. Think of it this way: how would you feel if a total stranger came into your house and expected you to accommodate them; this is how many people in this country feel about illegal immigrants and this is why I will NOT learn Spanish.
