My sister is 3 mos pregnant. First time. She is 35. Was told yesterday by a nurse in her ob/gyn's office that “her hormones were low on the serum test meaning her baby will be retarded.”

She is, of course, hysterical. Nurse had nothing more to tell her except that she can see the doctor this Tuesday. She is climbing the walls and I told her about this resource and that I would ask about this here.

Does anyone know about this? Has anyone had any experience of this during pregnancy? We just checked a Web site that said women hear this all the time, that it is very common and “usually” results in nothing. Is that true?

Thank you!

Sounds like she had an abnormal triple or quad screen. It is a test for Down's Syndrome, Trisomy 18 and Neural Tube Defects. It is NOT a diagnostic test. In fact it has a 5 to 25% false positive rate depending on the age of the mother to be. It also has a low true positive rate, about 70%. The only way to get 100% confirmation is with an amniocentesis, but it can cause a miscarriage. Ultrasound may be helpful, but it doesn't always detect birth defects.

This test is used to calculate hcg in blood strem..
Whenlow, these are the possibilities:
ectopic pregnancy
a miscarriage, or abortion. The miscarriage may only be threatened and never happen, may be happening at the time of the test, or may have already occurred. Further testing can determine which of these, if any, is the case.
use of diuretics, or "water pills," by the mother, which can interfere with the result
I have never heard of retardation a tri or quad pannel is usually done for that, calm her down & have her call & talk w/ her OB direct, I will pray! Good Luck

I don't think that, that's what their saying....I was 19 and pregnant with my first child, and they had me freaked out also,by a blood test, making me think my child had down's syndrome...they also told me the baby had uterine growth retardation....I was in a horrible panic...I'm not sure why any of this was said actually, as i didn't understand it either at the time...I also had very low hcg levels for quite some time in the beginning of my pregnancy...well, anyways everything went well, they did figure out that the blood test was a false possitive, and well her due date was also moved later like 2 or 3 times...she turned out fine and was a normal healthy baby.I don't know if I helped you at all, but hope everything is well with her baby also..
